Explanation

This verse shows an art that lovers practise unknown to others. In the presence of others both lover and beloved glance at each other generally, as if unacquainted. It is not truly a stranger's look; it is an acted look found only in lovers' eyes. 'Edhilaar' means strangers.

This general glance raises no suspicion in others. But for the two lovers it is a great message: it says 'our secret is safe' and 'I have not forgotten you'. Looking as strangers becomes the closest sharing between them.

The verse also shows the civility of the period of secret love. They felt it better to remain modest until the right time than to announce their desire to the world. It was their respect for family and society. In one line Valluvar shows the beauty of that restraint: love, even where it is not openly shown, lives on through the language of the eyes. 'Podhunokku' is looking not at one person alone but as if at everyone. It seems to carry no particular affection, yet lovers feel it. Knowing that this look is an act is the special skill of lovers; others see nothing in it. So Valluvar says it is found only in lovers' eyes: both the acting and the understanding of it exist only there. It is an art of silence as much as of sight.

A story

Two Strangers at the Chithirai Festival

The Chithirai festival at Madurai celebrates the wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar and the descent of Azhagar into the river. The streets fill with crowds. At such a festival a young man named Ilamaaran and a young woman named Amutha had come with their respective families.

The two had earlier exchanged a few signs with their eyes at the temple entrance. But today each was with their elders. When Ilamaaran looked at her, her face showed no sign. She too looked at him generally, as at one man in the crowd.

But at the edge of that general look there was a movement: her eyelids stayed a moment, gently. Ilamaaran knew it. He felt that the lingering eyelid said 'our secret is safe'. He too looked generally and passed on.

Some months later, through his parents, he formally asked for her hand. Both families agreed. That moment of looking like strangers in the festival crowd remained sweet in their memory always. This is an event that could happen in our culture, and the characters are invented. This is exactly the subtlety of the verse about looking at one another as strangers do. The wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar at Chithirai is regarded as the model for all our family weddings. On that auspicious day the two kept their secret with respect, which is a mark of dignified love. Because they were modest before the elders, they won the elders' trust, and that trust later opened the way to their marriage. So the act of looking as strangers in fact protected their bond.
