Explanation

In this verse too the lover explains the beloved's subtle sign. She does not turn her face directly toward him, nor does she look at him with full attention. But half-closing one eye and glancing from the corner, she smiles at him. That smile itself is the mark of her inner wish.

'Sirakkanithal' means narrowing the eye to look, or looking from the corner of the eye. It is the look of one who lacks the courage to look directly but cannot refrain from looking altogether. Her modesty and her eagerness are seen together in it. Others will never notice this glance, and only the lover knows it. That is the beauty of perceiving signs.

The structure of the verse is notable: first a denial (not looking), then an acceptance (smiling). Within the denial the acceptance lies hidden. Valluvar says here that true affection cannot wholly conceal itself. A note on the text: the source line of this verse lacks a final full stop, which is only a matter of printing and does not affect the meaning. Some commentators take this as a stealthy look made so that others do not detect it. Others explain that she really smiles with one eye narrowed. Both readings show her modesty equally, and the life of the verse lies in the lover feeling it as a message meant for him alone. The smile itself is the whole reply.

A story

A Sidelong Glance at the Temple Car Festival

The temple car festival of Panguni Uttiram is a very great celebration in our towns. The whole town gathers to take hold of the rope and pull the car. At one such festival a young man named Kathir was pulling the car rope. Beside the car a young woman named Malar stood with her grandmother, her hands joined in worship before the deity.

Kathir looked at her. She did not look directly at him; she turned her head as if speaking to her grandmother. But when the car moved on, she narrowed one eye a little, looked at him from the corner and smiled softly. Even the grandmother did not notice that smile.

Kathir's hand tightened firmly on the rope. A sweetness spread through his heart. She had not accepted openly, nor had she refused. But that single smile was enough for him. All that night he thought of that smile along with the sound of the car.

Later Kathir told his father and, through the elders, formally asked for the girl. Malar's family agreed. The sidelong look seen at the car festival joined the two families. This is a scene from our village culture, and the characters are invented. This is what Valluvar calls perceiving signs: seeing full affection in a smile that does not fully assent. Such festivals are a meeting ground of families, so it is natural that glances there bloom into marriage.
