Explanation

In this verse the lover's wonder turns into anxiety and care. We have seen that the anicham is the softest of flowers. She has put on not only the petals but, without removing them, the stalks too. How much can a flower stalk weigh? Yet he believes her waist is too frail to bear even that. Her waist is so slender that he fears it may snap under the load of a stem, and the thought makes him tremble.

The phrase nalla padaa parai means that auspicious drums will not sound, and hints that the drum of death will beat in their place. In ancient times marriages and funerals had different drum rhythms. He fears that her waist will break and her life go with it, so that instead of the drum of celebration the drum of mourning will be heard. It is an extravagant fancy, but the fear of love is shown very gracefully. Those who love imagine a small harm to be great and are afraid for the beloved.

We know this feeling from daily life. A mother is alarmed at a child's smallest scratch, and we offer an arm to the elderly even for a low step. Such concern is a sign of love. By pointing to it, Valluvar shows that love is not wonder alone, it is also the responsibility of wanting to protect.

A story

The Navaratri Garland

It was a Navaratri evening in Kanchipuram. In Revathi's home the golu steps had been arranged beautifully. Her eight-year-old daughter Kavitha was getting ready to appear as Ambika. Her mother put on her an old silk skirt, and her grandmother Kothai brought a big jasmine garland and a delicate string of mullai.

In her enthusiasm Revathi wound all the flowers, stalks and all, around Kavitha's hair and waist. Soon Kavitha began to complain. "Amma, it is heavy; it pricks my waist." Revathi did not notice, because her mind was on how fine the child would look to the guests who would come to see the golu.

The grandmother came near and touched Kavitha's waist. The stalks and wires were pressing into her skin. "Revathi, flowers are for adding beauty, not for causing pain. Take the stalks off. The child's waist is tender," she said. Revathi, a little ashamed, undid the flowers, removed the stalks and strung only the soft petals into a garland.

Kavitha's face brightened. She walked freely now, danced, and stood smiling as the Goddess. The visitors admired her. But for Revathi the biggest lesson of the day stayed in her own mind.

After the puja the grandmother said gently, "Love is like a flower. We must be careful when we put it on someone. To see whether the wearer feels pain is the first sign of affection." Revathi nodded. From then on, whatever she did for her daughter, she paused a moment to ask whether it had become a burden.
