Explanation

The dark mark seen on the moon is called maru in Tamil. Even at its fullest the moon shows a stain, and besides that it keeps waning and waxing. The phrase aruvaai niraindha is generally taken to mean that the moon fills up what it had lost and shines again, yet its mark does not go. Pointing to that, the lover asks where the stain is on this lady's face. It is a boast put in the form of a question.

No charge is laid against the moon here; its natural flaw is simply noted. But Valluvar accepts the tradition of comparing the face with the moon only in order to go beyond it. She is not merely like the moon, she is better. The poet also hints, with subtlety, that flawlessness is a vision seen only by the eyes of a loving man.

The lesson for us is to look closely at the strengths of those we love rather than magnify their faults. People who know that even the moon carries a stain will not demand perfection from others. Yet the vision love gives, which hides the flaw and displays the good, is worth cultivating as a habit, because it keeps relationships safe.

A story

The Moon's Stain

The Puranas tell the story behind the waxing and waning of the moon. Daksha Prajapati had twenty-seven daughters, and he gave them all in marriage to Chandra, the moon. But Chandra showed special love only to Rohini. The others were hurt and complained to their father. Daksha called Chandra and told him, "Treat them all equally." Chandra agreed, but before long he did the same thing again.

This is told in the Bhagavata and other Puranas. In anger Daksha cursed him: "May your light wane." Chandra's light began to fade. Alarmed, he took refuge in Lord Shiva. The compassionate Shiva placed him in his matted locks, and so, instead of being destroyed, Chandra was granted a state in which he declines and grows again. Tradition says that this is why the crescent moon adorns Shiva's hair.

From that time the moon has waned and waxed, and poets say that a mark remains on it as a reminder of its fault. Villagers tell this story to teach children a lesson: if we show partiality towards those close to us, the fault will follow us all our lives.

On a Karthigai evening a grandmother told this story to her grandson. When he asked, "Why is there a stain on the moon?" she said, "It is a sign of the compassion of God, who loves even one who has erred." Hearing this, the boy began, whenever he quarrelled with his younger sister, to think for a moment of the moon.

Through the story we see the hint of the verse. The moon is beautiful, yet it has its waning and its stain. A face without any flaw is a dream seen by the lover. In truth all of us shine with some stain, and the maturity to know it and still honour one another is love.
