Explanation

In Tamil literature the anicham flower marks the very limit of softness. It is said to wither if you only bring it to your nose. Standing before such a flower, the lover speaks to it as though to a friend and tells it how tender his beloved is. The word vaazhi here is a blessing: he thanks the flower that serves as the measure of his wonder. He praises it so that, by comparison, she stands higher. No insult is meant to the flower. Both are soft, and she is softer still.

The word nanneerai may be taken as good nature, and the nature of the anicham is softness. So the lover first honours the flower for its quality and then finds the peak of that quality in her. The word menneeral contains neer, meaning nature, but it also brings to mind the yielding quality of water. Many commentators see in it not only bodily tenderness but a softness of speech, glance and conduct.

The lesson for everyday life is simple. When we love someone we also become responsible for their tenderness. A hand that plucks a blossom must be gentle, and so our words and actions must not bruise the heart of the one we cherish. The verse teaches, with great charm, that the first language of love is the avoidance of harshness. It also reminds us that praise of another person, when it comes from real attention, makes us gentler ourselves.

A story

The Limit of Softness

On the mornings of Madurai, a flower market gathers near the eastern gateway of the Meenakshi Amman temple. At Valliammai's stall her daughter Valarmathi sat threading jasmine and mullai into garlands. A young man named Senthil had come to buy flowers for his mother's visit to the shrine. He picked up one blossom and lifted it towards his nose.

"Brother, gently! That one is delicate. Bring it to your nose and it will wilt," said Valarmathi. There was no sharpness in her voice, only the care of someone protecting a flower. Senthil watched how her fingers pulled the thread through the blossom without hurting it. He could hardly see her fingers touch the petals.

"Why so much care?" he asked. "These flowers go to the Goddess. Before they reach her, our hands must not cause them pain," she said. He fell silent. It seemed to him that the flower was soft, but softer still was the heart that respected its softness.

That evening, after darshan at the temple, he sat quietly beside his mother, which was unusual for him. "What is it?" she asked. "Amma, some blossoms need someone to see that they do not fade. I met such a person today." His mother smiled.

In their custom, the elders must go to ask for the girl's hand, and Senthil did not rush to speak of his feeling. A few days later his mother met Valliammai. The two families talked and, on a good day chosen before the Goddess, the marriage was fixed.

On the wedding day, as Valarmathi sat on the dais, Senthil handed her a small bunch of flowers. "This is not anicham, but I will always remember how you handle flowers," he said. She laughed. From that day he learned to handle his own words, with her, as carefully as she handled flowers.
