Explanation

The last verse of the chapter ends with a beautiful simile. For the learned, the more they learn, the more they see how much they do not know; so they learn still more. In the same way, says the lover, as I join with her, my love goes on growing.

'Aridhorum ariyaamai kandatraal' is like seeing one's ignorance each time one learns. This is the nature of knowledge: the more we learn the more remains to be learned. Before the sea of knowledge the learned see themselves as small.

Applying this to love is clever. Love is the same: the nearer we come, the more we long to come nearer. Familiarity does not cool affection but deepens it. Love never says "enough".

'Serindhorum' is each time of drawing near or joining. 'Seyizhai' is she who wears red ornaments. 'Kaamam' here is not only bodily desire but the increase of love.

Commentators compare this simile with the humility and unsatisfied hunger of the learned. In love too, fulfilment is not a point but a journey that goes on growing.

This gives household life great hope. There is no need to fear that love will lessen with time. If understanding and love grow, an old couple will have a deeper love than a new couple.

The days Rama and Sita lived with each other at Chitrakuta in the Ramayana are an example. Valmiki beautifully portrays their deep love and joy of understanding one another.

If, like a student, we try each day to know our partner anew, love will grow without fading; that is the concluding message of the verse.

A story

Rama and Sita at Chitrakuta

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana built a hut on Chitrakuta hill and lived there. The river Mandakini flowed, flowers bloomed, peacocks danced and monkeys and deer roamed everywhere. In that beautiful natural setting their forest life was sweet.

One day Rama sat with Sita and showed her the beauty of the hill. One by one he pointed out the waves of the Mandakini, the deer drinking at the bank and the flowering trees. Valmiki writes that he spoke in effect, "Sita, while I am with you, I feel no sorrow even at the loss of Ayodhya."

These words show the depth of Rama's love for Sita. Though he had lost kingdom and wealth, his heart was full. The reason was her nearness.

Though they lived close to each other for many days, their love did not lessen. On the contrary it grew in a new form each day. Sita too tried to ease Rama's sorrow; and Rama spoke to make her glad.

This portrayal agrees with the spirit of verse 1110. As ignorance shows the more one learns, love grew the more they joined. The more they knew each other, the more they desired to know.

One day when Rama was sleeping in Sita's lap, a crow-demon (Jayanta, Indra's son) pecked Sita and troubled her. Rama angrily hurled a blade of grass as the Brahmastra. Later, out of mercy, he spared his life, tradition says. It shows the strength of Rama's protecting love.

The message here is that the love of household life is greater than the comforts of royal life. At Chitrakuta a hut, a hill and a river were heaven enough for them.

We can learn from the life of Rama and Sita the habit of seeing our life partner with fresh eyes every day. Love grows with practice; that is the message of this story.
