Explanation

Valluvar uses a lovely, everyday simile here. What is it to sit in one's own home and eat the food one has earned after sharing it with others? It is full, pure and without fault. The lover says the embrace of this lady is just as sweet.

'Thammil irundhu' is sitting calmly in one's own home. 'Thamadhu paaththu undal' is eating, with others, what has come through one's own labour. These two are the two pillars of household life: the home and sharing.

The depth of the verse is this: joy is not in eating alone but in sharing. In the same way, the embrace of love is a fullness two hearts share. It is not one person's desire only but the agreement of two.

Commentators link this simile with the dharma of household life. Like the contentment of one who practises hospitality in his home and eats what is left, the embrace of one's wife is joy joined with dharma, they say.

It lifts desire from mere bodily pleasure by joining it with dharma, sharing and fulfilment. That is the special beauty of the Kural's Inbattuppal.

In the Hindu tradition the couple Arundhati and Vasishtha are honoured as the ideal of household life. In Tamil weddings the ritual in which the bride and groom look at the star Arundhati is still performed.

We too can join the joy of our household life with sharing, hospitality and dharma. Then joy becomes still sweeter.

A story

Arundhati and Vasishtha

In Hindu tradition the sage Vasishtha and his wife Arundhati are honoured as the ideal couple of household life. Vasishtha was Rama's family preceptor and a Brahmarishi. In the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana the hospitality of his hermitage is famous.

That Kanda tells how Vishvamitra came to Vasishtha's hermitage. Vishvamitra was then a king and came with a great army. Vasishtha welcomed him lovingly. With the help of Nandini, the daughter of Kamadhenu, he fed the king and his army a feast of six tastes.

Vasishtha's household shows in this scene: a simple hermitage, but no one goes back hungry. Tradition says Arundhati was the partner of that home. The hospitality done with the wife beside him is the beauty of the hermitage.

Arundhati is praised for her love, firmness and purity toward her husband. Tradition says in the circle of the Seven Sages the Arundhati star appears joined near Vasishtha's star. Since they circle each other, astronomers see it as a double star.

In Tamil weddings the ritual of the couple looking at this star expresses the blessing that love and firmness may last. When the groom shows Arundhati to the bride, it is a prayer that her married life may be like hers.

This agrees with verse 1107. Household life is as sweet as eating, in one's own home, the food one has shared. Vasishtha's hermitage was such a home, where sharing, love and dharma were one.

We too can keep the habit of sharing food and joy with a loving partner in our homes. That is the taste of household life.

The story reminds us that love does not grow alone; sharing and dharma make it grow.
