Rejoicing in the Embrace

This chapter, in the Inbattuppal, celebrates the joy of lovers united. The lover finds the delights of all five senses in one place and marvels that she is both the pain and its cure; her arms are sweeter than the world of the lotus-eyed Lord; near her he is cooled, away he burns; their embrace lets not even air between; and quarrel, understanding and union are the lovers' sweets. As the learned feel their ignorance grow, so with closeness love only grows.

Introduction

The third part of the Kural, the Inbattuppal (Kamattuppal), speaks of the love of husband and wife in two sections, Kalaviyal and Karpiyal. This chapter, within Kalaviyal, has the lover tell his joy after the lovers have united. 'Punarchchi' is union; 'magizhdhal' is rejoicing. It is written in the refined form of the Tamil akam tradition of love poems of the five landscapes, so the words keep dignity and poetic grace.

The ten verses show the lover's heart. All the delights of the five senses are in her alone (1101). The cure for disease is another thing, but for the pain she gave, she alone is the cure (1102). Her arms are sweeter than the world of the lotus-eyed Lord (1103). When she leaves she burns, when she comes near she cools (1104). Whenever he desires, her arms seem to be whatever he desires (1105). Her arms seem made of nectar; at their touch life sprouts afresh (1106). Her embrace is sweet like a household that shares its food (1107). An embrace in which not even air passes is sweet to lovers (1108). Quarrel, understanding and union are the fruit lovers get (1109). As ignorance shows the more one knows, love grows the more one is near (1110).

Commentators differ in places. In verse 1103, most take 'thaamarai kannaan ulagu' as Vishnu's world Vaikuntha; some read it as the world of a lover with lotus-like eyes. In verse 1107, 'thammil irundhu thamadhu paaththu unndatraal' is taken as eating one's food in one's own house after sharing it with others. The simile of 1110 is generally read as the humility of the learned.

In the Hindu tradition domestic love is part of dharma. Shiva and Parvati standing as Ardhanarishvara, each half of the other; Rama and Sita living in each other's thought; Savitri refusing to leave her husband even before Yama; Murugan and Valli; Krishna with Rukmini and Satyabhama; Andal and Ranganatha: love is honoured in many forms. The epics praise love with dignity.

We may read this chapter as a poem honouring the love of husband and wife. Valluvar, with lovely similes, shows that in love sweetness, quarrel and reunion are natural, and that love does not fade with familiarity but grows. It reminds us that household life is not only a penance but also a celebration.

Chapter story

Parvati's Penance and Her Marriage to Shiva

The Shiva Purana and Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava honour Parvati's love and penance. Born as the daughter of Himavan, Parvati had in her previous birth been Sati, daughter of Daksha, who gave up her life at her father's insult. In this birth too she wished to win Shiva as her husband.

At that time Shiva was immersed in meditation. The gods sent Kamadeva to wake him. When Kamadeva shot his arrow, Shiva's third eye opened and burned him. Seeing it, Parvati was shaken; but she understood that Shiva could not be won by beauty or arrows, only by penance.

She left her palace life, wore bark, and did severe penance. In summer she stood amid four fires. In rain and cold she stood in water. Because she even gave up eating leaves she was named 'Aparna', tradition says.

Moved by her penance, Shiva came in the form of a young brahmachari to test her. He spoke ill of Shiva: "He lives in cremation grounds and smears ashes; why do you want him?" Parvati angrily opposed him: "You do not know his worth."

Seeing her firmness, Shiva appeared in his real form. Kalidasa writes in effect that he said, "By your penance you have won me; from today I am your servant." Later in the Himalayas, guided by the Seven Sages, their marriage took place before the gods.

At the wedding Brahma was the priest and Vishnu gave Parvati away, tradition says. Gods and sages showered flowers. The love that Shiva and Parvati sought in each other was united.

The story shows that the joy of union comes as the fruit of penance. Union reached through long waiting, firmness and purity of desire gives great sweetness. That is why the verses of this chapter celebrate joy.

In the Shaiva tradition Shiva and Shakti are an inseparable pair. Their wedding is celebrated every year in many temples; the Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Tirukkalyanam at Madurai is the best example.

In our own household life too, love needs firmness and patience like penance, and the story reminds us that from this the joy of union blossoms.

In this story Shakti is not something outside Shiva; she is his power itself, a Shaiva philosophical view. So Parvati's penance is not only an effort to win Shiva but the joining of two halves. The inner meaning is that in household life too husband and wife stand as halves of one another.

Parvati's firmness is the centre of the tale. What she lost as Sati she sought again as Himavan's daughter, and her penance shows the patience and purity love needs. Her longing was great, yet the way to it was restraint and firmness. That is why the union was so joyful.

Shiva's test is also important. Moments that test whether love is true come in life. To speak in defence of the beloved when others scorn them is the mark of love. Parvati did this beautifully. In household life too, guarding a partner's honour is this same firmness.

At Madurai, Kanchi, Tiruvarur and other shrines this wedding is celebrated even today. Those festivals join families and townspeople and recall the auspiciousness of household life.
