Explanation

'Vetta' is desired. A person desires different things at different times: rest when tired, food when hungry, shade in heat, comfort in sorrow. In this verse the lover says her arms give joy at each moment like each thing he desires.

'Thottaar kadhuppinaal' is she whose tresses are adorned with garlands of flowers. 'Thol', the arm, is a symbol of her embrace, shelter and companionship. Here the arm is spoken of not just as a limb but as the refuge of love.

There is a great truth here. A loving partner changes according to all our changing needs: comfort in sorrow, a sharer in joy, a resting place in weariness, a guide in confusion. In that way one relationship gives the delights of many things.

Commentators take it that whatever the lover's desire, she is the place that fulfils it. It shows the fullness of his attachment to her.

As poetry it is a lover's exaggeration. As a view of life it means that a good household becomes a refuge that supports in all stages of life.

In the Hindu tradition Jayadeva's Gita Govinda beautifully sings the love of Radha and Krishna. In it Radha tells her friends of her longing, and Krishna appears as the place where each wish of her heart is fulfilled.

We too can try to be the support our partner needs at each time; that is the way to the joy this verse shows.

A story

Radha and Krishna in the Gita Govinda

The Gita Govinda, composed by Jayadeva in twelfth-century Odisha, is a lovely Sanskrit poem of the love of Radha and Krishna. In the Vaishnava tradition it is also honoured as an allegory of love between God and the soul. It contains the ashtapadis, which are sung with music.

The poem begins in spring. On the bank of the Yamuna, in the shade of kadamba trees, the women of the cowherd settlement dance with Krishna. Hearing the sound of Krishna's flute, Radha's mind rushes to him. Seeing him dance with the other women, her heart aches.

Radha tells her friend her sorrow. The friend goes to Krishna and describes Radha's longing. Krishna too grieves and realises his fault. Each seeks the other with longing. This is the quarrel and yearning of love.

At last the two unite. In that union Krishna appears to Radha as the fulfilment of every wish of her heart. Jayadeva sings that state with great poetry: all she desired is found in him.

It matches the spirit of verse 1105. As in 'vetta pozhudhin avai avai polum', Krishna becomes for Radha the refuge fit for each of her needs: comfort in sorrow, fulfilment in longing, a sharer in joy.

Vaishnava commentators see this love as a symbol of the relation between the soul and the Supreme, the state in which the soul realises that all its desires are fulfilled in God.

In Tamil culture too the akam tradition and devotional literature sing the same feeling. Though Valluvar's verse looks to human love and Jayadeva's song to love of God, both honour the fullness of love.

We too can stand by our partner by feeling their need, not only hearing what they ask. That is the secret of household sweetness.

Do I notice what my loved one needs from me today before they have to ask?
