Explanation

Fire naturally burns. The nearer, the more it burns; the farther, the less. But this fire called the beloved is the opposite: when she moves away it burns, when she draws near it cools. The lover marvels what fire this is.

'Theruum' is burns. 'Kurugungaal' is when near. 'Thannennum' is becomes cool. 'Thee yaandup pettaal ival' is where did she get this fire? It is a paradox.

The truth of the verse speaks of the sorrow of separation and the calm of union. When the beloved is not near, the mind burns; sleep does not come, even moonlight scorches. When she comes the heat subsides.

Here 'thee' is the heat of love. Valluvar calls it a wonder. Fire naturally burns those who come near; this fire burns those who leave it.

Commentators explain it as the nature of love itself. Love binds us; separation shows the pain of that binding. Nearness is its cure.

Rama's grief in separation in the Ramayana is an example. At the start of the Kishkindha Kanda, Rama, parted from Sita, laments on seeing the spring season. Valmiki writes that the cool breeze and the moon seemed to burn him.

The verse reminds us of the worth of presence in our relations. The coolness we forget when we are near, we feel when we are far.

A story

Rama Pining in Separation

The Kishkindha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana opens with Rama reaching the bank of Lake Pampa. It was spring. Flowers bloomed, bees hummed and a cool breeze blew. Seeing the beauty, Rama's mind ached, thinking of Sita.

Many days had already passed since Sita was abducted. The lotuses of Pampa, the cuckoos calling from the trees, the dance of peacocks gave no joy to his eyes. For he could not share that joy with her.

He says to Lakshmana: "Brother, this spring gives me no joy; instead it increases my sorrow. If I were with Sita all this would give me gladness." Valmiki shapes his lament into a long song.

When he thought the cool breeze might have touched her, it soothed him; but in her absence the same breeze was like fire that burns, Valmiki shows. This is the paradox of verse 1104: coolness and fire appear as one.

Lakshmana consoled him. "Do not lose heart; by effort all can be won; we shall recover Sita," he assured him. Rama gained some composure. Then he set out to meet Sugriva.

Rama's grief of separation is no mere emotional lament. It shows the depth of his love and the tenderness of human feeling. For the hero Rama to weep for his wife is not weakness but character.

What we see in this scene is that when love is present, beauty and sweetness are there; when it is absent, the same beauty gives pain. This is what the verse says: "when she leaves it burns, when she draws near it is cool".

In our own lives too we feel this in days of separation from loved ones. So let us cherish the days we are together with love.
