Explanation

This is a question verse. 'Inidhu kol' means "can it be sweet?" The lover asks: compared with the joy of sleeping in the tender arms of the beloved, can 'thaamarai kannaan ulagu', the world of the lotus-eyed Lord, that is Vaikuntha, be sweeter? The poet's inner meaning is that it cannot.

Here Valluvar takes Vaikuntha, regarded as a supreme joy, for comparison. This is not an insult to God but the poetic skill of exaggerating love's sweetness. For the lover, her embrace is heaven.

'Thaam veezhvaar' is those whom one has loved. 'Mendhol' is tender arms. 'Thuyilin' is if one sleeps in them. Sleep here is a symbol of peace, rest and safety.

Commentators mostly take 'thaamarai kannaan ulagu' as Vaikuntha. Some extend it to all the worlds ruled by the lotus-eyed Lord.

In the Hindu tradition household life is the finest stage of life. It is natural that the love of a dear wife is counted greater than worldly delights. The story of Savitri is the best example.

The verse makes us reflect on how much we value the peace of household life and the love of a partner. If there is love in a simple house, that itself is heaven.

A story

Savitri Who Won Even Yama

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata the sage Markandeya tells Yudhishthira the story of Savitri. She was the daughter of King Ashvapati of Madra. She chose her husband herself and wished to marry Satyavan, a youth living in the forest. Though Narada warned that Satyavan would die within a year, her mind did not change.

She left royal life and lived in the forest with Satyavan and his blind parents. In that simple life she lacked nothing. Her husband's love was her wealth. As the year's end drew near she kept a fast, counting the day.

On that day Satyavan went to cut wood. Savitri went with him. With a headache he lay in her lap and died. Yama, the lord of dharma, came and drew out his life with a noose.

Savitri followed Yama. When he told her to turn back, she spoke sweet words about dharma. Yama, pleased, told her to ask a boon other than her husband's life. With the first boon she asked for her father-in-law's sight, with the second the kingdom he had lost.

She kept following Yama. With the third boon she asked for a hundred sons for her father. With the fourth she asked that she might have a hundred sons by Satyavan. Yama, without thinking, said, "So be it."

Then Savitri said, "How can I have sons without my husband?" Yama realised he was bound by his own boon and laughed. He released Satyavan's life, says the Mahabharata.

Savitri did not ask Yama for any world like Vaikuntha. That was not enough for her; she wanted her husband's presence. This agrees with the spirit of verse 1103: for her there is no world to match her beloved's arms.
