Explanation

The last verse of this chapter returns to where it began. In the first verse he said she is softer than the anicham. Now he says that even the anicham and the swan's down would feel to her feet like the prickly nerunji fruit. A swan's feather is soft enough to stuff a bed, and the anicham is the softest of flowers. That both should seem as hard as a thorn to her foot widens the boundary of tenderness still further. The nerunji fruit is full of spikes and hurts a bare foot.

The power of the verse lies in this reversal. The two things taken as the height of softness seem harsh before her. It tells us less about her foot than about how anxious the lover is to protect her. In the fifth verse he feared for her waist; here he fears for the pain in her feet. The chapter that opened in wonder ends in care.

The ending is apt. To admire beauty is easy, to guard it gently is hard. One who truly loves another wants to see that not the smallest hurt touches them. In family and friendship, removing even a small thorn from the path of those we love is real affection. In Valluvar's language it is the heart that sees even anicham as a thorn.

A story

Sita on the Forest Path

This scene comes from the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayana. To keep the word of his father Dasharatha, Rama prepared to go into exile for fourteen years. He went to take leave of his wife Sita. "Stay in the palace. The forest is hard, full of thorns and stones. Your tender feet will suffer there," he said. Sita refused. "Wherever you go is my palace. Any thorn I walk on with you is a flower to me," she says in the epic.

Rama was moved by her resolve, yet his worry for her delicate body did not leave him. The tales sing that on the forest path he walked ahead of her, clearing every stone and thorn himself. Lakshmana went with them.

At the Ganga, Guha, the chief of the boatmen, welcomed them warmly and helped them cross the river by boat. Seeing the princes and the queen who had given up palace life, his heart melted. No one could help wondering how hard the forest path would be for such tender feet.

Thinking of this scene, we see that the mind in the last line of the verse, which sees even anicham as a thorn, lives also in Rama. The love that clears thorns from the path of the beloved shines here. Sita too took her husband's suffering as her own and went forward.

Thus each shared the burden of the other. To honour tenderness and also to recognise its strength is mature love.
