Explanation

This verse gives a basic understanding of the nature of trouble. 'Ilakkam' is the target at which an arrow is shot. Valluvar says the body is the target struck by arrows of sorrow. For anyone born, the body must face disease, age, pain and loss; that is nature. One who knows this beforehand does not break in surprise when trouble comes.

'Kalakkaththai kaiyaaraak kollaadhaam mel' means the great do not turn agitation into grief. 'Kaiyaaru' is sorrow that disables action. Agitation is the first shock; kaiyaaru is the state of staying in that shock. The first shock is natural; but rising without staying in it is the sign of the great.

Commentators take 'mel' as the great or the wise. This is the view of sages who have realised the truth about the body. In our spiritual tradition too, the sense that the body is impermanent runs deep. That sense does not give fear; it gives clarity.

A soldier going to war goes knowing that arrows will come. So when an arrow strikes he is not shaken; he binds the wound and advances. Life too is a battlefield. One who accepted beforehand that trouble will come manages it.

In today's life we feel that trouble has come only to us and ask 'why me?' The verse gently says: anyone with a body will meet trouble; to accept it and rise is the way of the great.

A story

Bhishma on the Bed of Arrows

The Bhishma Parva and Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata describe Bhishma's last days. On the tenth day of the Kurukshetra war, Bhishma, commander of the Kaurava army, was felled by Arjuna's arrows. Arrows shot by Arjuna with Shikhandi placed in front pierced his whole body. He did not touch the ground; the arrows themselves became a bed to bear his body. When his head hung, Arjuna made a pillow for him with three arrows.

He had the boon of dying at his own will. He decided to wait for the Uttarayana. Warriors of both armies circled him and bowed. When thirst came he asked for water. He did not accept the scented water Duryodhana offered. Arjuna shot an arrow into the earth and made Ganga's water rise into his mouth, the Purana says.

Even lying with arrows all over his body Bhishma was not shaken. He did not speak of pain. As one who knew that the fruit of his life was wisdom, after the war he taught Yudhishthira rajadharma, apaddharma and moksha dharma. Those teachings form the Shanti Parva and Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata. The Vishnu Sahasranama also came in his teaching.

Bhishma lived out the truth that the body is the target of sorrow's arrows. With a body pierced by arrows he kept his mind unmoving. Though pain was there, he did not turn agitation into grief. His calm gave wisdom and dharma to the world.

Lying on the bed of arrows, Bhishma was a walking example of 'ilakkam udambidumbaikku'. Trouble afflicted the body; it did not afflict his mind.
