Explanation

The previous verse spoke of one who does not crave pleasure beforehand. This verse speaks of one who does not drown in it even when pleasure has come. 'Inbaththul inbam vizhaiyaadhaan' is one who has control over pleasure even while enjoying it. He does not lose himself in pleasure; so even when trouble comes he does not lose himself.

This is a subtle psychological truth. One who rejoiced beyond measure in pleasure sinks beyond measure in pain. In a swing, as high as it goes on one side, it dips as low on the other. Likewise the wave of feelings goes equally in both directions. One who keeps poise in pleasure keeps poise in pain too.

Commentators link this to the idea of equanimity. The Bhagavad Gita too honours the mind that is equal in pleasure and pain. Valluvar says the same truth in simple Tamil. It is not only a religious word but practical wisdom for life.

We can see this in daily life. Those floating in the intoxication of success are utterly shaken by one failure. Those who have humility in success and firmness in failure last on a long journey. It applies to sportspersons, artists and leaders.

So this verse gives us a practice: enjoy today's happiness with gratitude, but do not clutch it. If you practise so, tomorrow's trouble will not shake you much.

A story

Janaka When Mithila Burned

In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata and other texts a story is told of the supreme poise of King Janaka. Janaka, who ruled Mithila, was a wise king, also known as the father of Sita. Texts praise that he lived amid wealth yet was unattached to it. He is also called 'Videha', one who has gone beyond the body.

One day, tradition says, Janaka was listening to the teaching of a sage. Then a man ran into the assembly and said, 'King, the city of Mithila is on fire!' Everyone in the assembly was alarmed. Only Janaka remained calm. The Mahabharata records his famous words: 'Though Mithila burns, nothing of mine burns.'

The depth of that sentence is great. He used wealth; he also knew his duty of protecting the city. But he did not grip them tight as 'mine'. So when loss came, his mind did not move. As king he did his duty; but he did not lose peace of mind.

This same Janaka was never intoxicated by the pleasures of his palace. Even in times of wealth he had humility. So even in times of trouble he could keep the same balance. The practice of staying equal in joy and sorrow was part of his daily life.

Texts such as the Ashtavakra Gita also praise Janaka's wisdom. Janaka is a beautiful example for the verse 'inbaththul inbam vizhaiyaadhaan thunbaththul thunbam urudhal ilan'. His life shows that a mind not intoxicated by pleasure does not break in pain.
