Explanation

There is a grim humour in this verse. It sounds like advice for someone who wants to be ruined: do this, and you will get what you want. No one really wishes for ruin, but many invite it by their actions, and Valluvar writes for them. The phrase 'kelaadhu seyka' can be read in two ways. One is to act without listening to the counsel of good men. The other is to carry on even when others have pointed out the danger.

The second half is just as pointed. 'Adal' means to kill or destroy, and 'aatruvaar' are those who have the strength to do it. So the sense is: to offend one who has the power to destroy you is the same as wishing for your own destruction. Valluvar is not warning wrongdoers here. He is warning people who, without realising it, are building their own downfall.

The first half applies strongly to everyday life. It fits the patient who ignores the doctor and lets a disease grow, the businessman who dismisses the lawyer's advice and breaks the law, and the person who brushes off a friend's warning and takes a dangerous decision. The humility to listen to counsel is the first armour that protects us from ruin.

A story

Duryodhana Who Would Not Listen

This episode comes from the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata.

Shortly before the war at Kurukshetra, Krishna came to Hastinapura as an envoy, hoping to prevent the conflict. In the assembly sat the grandsire Bhishma, the teacher Drona, the wise Vidura and the blind king Dhritarashtra. With one voice they advised Duryodhana: "Do not go to war. Give the Pandavas their rightful share."

Krishna finally made a modest request: "Give the Pandavas only five villages, and let us avoid the war." Duryodhana answered proudly, "I will not give even as much land as the point of a needle can hold." He listened to none of the elders of his house.

He did not stop there. He tried to seize Krishna himself, who had come as a messenger. At once Krishna revealed his universal form in the hall. The blinding splendour made everyone close their eyes, and some trembled with fear. Even then Duryodhana's mind did not change.

Krishna left the assembly, and war became unavoidable. In the eighteen days of battle Duryodhana's vast army was destroyed, and all his hundred brothers fell.

Refusing the words of the wise, rejecting even the help that was offered, and trusting in his own strength alone, Duryodhana brought about his own ruin. The tale points to what Valluvar says: provoking the powerful and neglecting good counsel lead a man straight towards destruction.
