Explanation

In this verse Valluvar takes the power of the great to its highest point. In 'venthanum venthu kedum', the first 'venthan' is understood by Parimelazhagar as Indra, the king of the gods. Some other commentators read it generally as any king losing his kingdom. In either case, if even the lord of the gods can fall, one wonders at the plight of others.

The phrase 'endhiya kolgaiyaar' is beautiful. They are people who bear their chosen vow without wavering. It refers to those who steadily keep their penance, discipline and fasts. They do not give up their principle for the sake of worldly comfort, and penance has gathered in them. That is why their word has power.

The word 'idaimurindhu' deserves notice. It is like a branch of a tree snapping in the middle and falling. The sense is that a king falls from the middle of his reign, from the very height of it. It shows that even the highest position is unsteady.

From this we learn that office is temporary, while character and righteousness are lasting. Everyone in authority should respect those who are higher in moral conduct. Even at the peak of power, humility is what protects us.

A story

Nahusha and the Sage Agastya

This story is told in the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata.

Indra, the lord of the gods, once went into hiding, afraid of the burden of guilt that came upon him for slaying the demon Vritra. As the throne was empty, the gods placed King Nahusha on the seat of Indra. He was known as a righteous king, but within a few days of receiving power he lost his self-restraint.

He saw Indra's queen Shachi and wished to possess her. Faithful to her husband, she set a condition to gain time: "Come to me in a palanquin carried by sages." The proud Nahusha agreed and made the sages carry his palanquin.

Among those who bore the palanquin was the sage Agastya. When its pace slowed, Nahusha lost patience and cried "Sarpa, sarpa!", meaning 'move faster', and, says the Mahabharata, kicked Agastya with his foot.

Agastya slowly looked up. "You have made ascetics your carriers and kicked one of them in your pride. Fall to the earth as a serpent!" he cursed. That moment Nahusha's divine radiance vanished. He turned into a great python and dropped from heaven to the earth.

Later, when the Pandavas wandered in the forest, that serpent seized Bhima. After Yudhishthira answered his questions on dharma, Nahusha was freed from the curse, the tradition says.

Though he held the seat of the lord of the gods, Nahusha lost his throne and his lustre by insulting an ascetic. The story shows that humility is needed most when power stands at its peak.

To reflect on

When you receive a little power or a position of authority, do you grow more humble or more careless?
