Explanation

There are two kinds of great ones in this verse. One is 'kundrannaar', those who are like mountains. The other is 'nindrannaar', those who seem to stand firmly established. The first group are mountainous in penance and character. The second group seem secure through wealth and authority, and they may be kings or great magnates. Some commentators explain 'nindrannaar' as those who are firm in their position of power. Such rulers believe that no one can shake them, and Valluvar warns that this belief is exactly what the wise should doubt.

The phrase 'kunda madippin' gives two senses. One is to think of someone as lowly, to belittle. The other is for the esteem of the mountain-like great to diminish. Either way, once the mind of a great person has turned against someone, the downfall of that person begins.

The word 'kudiyodu' is the important one. Ruin does not end with one man. His family, clan and kin are caught in it. Valluvar shows how one man's pride can affect generations.

In modern life too, we see how the arrogance of a leader brings down his family, his organisation and even his town together. We must act with the knowledge that what we do decides the lives of those who depend on us.

A story

Kartavirya and the Hermitage of Jamadagni

This history is told in the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana.

Kartavirya Arjuna, king of the Haihaya line, is said by the Puranas to have had a thousand arms. By the grace of Dattatreya he had gained great strength and ruled the whole earth. His army and wealth made him seem invincible.

One day, tired after hunting, he came to the hermitage of the sage Jamadagni. By the grace of Kamadhenu, the divine cow, the sage gave a rich feast to the king and his whole army. The king was amazed that a simple hermitage could offer such a banquet.

But instead of gratitude he felt greed. "Such a cow should belong to a king. What does a sage need her for?" he thought, and he took away the treasure of the hermitage by force. Jamadagni's son Parashurama was not at the hermitage then. When he returned and learnt what had happened, he was furious.

Parashurama was a man of great penance who carried an axe. Alone, he went and fought Kartavirya's army and cut down the thousand arms of the king. Before the mountain-like strength of penance, even that great warrior could not stand.

Sorrow followed further. Kartavirya's sons, to avenge their father, killed Jamadagni. Parashurama, enraged at the wrong, destroyed the mighty kings of the Haihaya line, say the Puranas. The pride and greed of one king ruined his family and his clan.

The history shows that one who scorns those with the strength of penance, however great a king he may be, falls together with his line.
