Meaning

She dwells in the white lotus; she dwells in the sound the veena makes; she dwells in the hearts of poets who speak poems overflowing with joy; she shines within the Veda chanted by those who sought and realised the Real; she is the inner meaning of the merciful words spoken by guileless sages.

She is in the song of women's sweet voices; she is in the babble of children; she has made her home in the voice of the singing koel and the tongue of the parrot; becoming flawless craft, she is in the beauty of the lovely painting, the tower and the temple; she has taken joy itself as her form.

She is the family deity of people who live by honest work; the goddess to whom all bow as refuge - smiths who make the weapons that are the life of fierce war, sculptors who study their art, carpenters, traders who deal abundantly in good wares, heroic kings, and Vedic scholars; the goddess who is knowledge on earth.

The goddess who makes all gods known; the goddess who shows evil and turns it away; the goddess who is the life of the life of those who resolve to be saved; the goddess to whom those who begin a task saying 'we will do it' bow seeking excellence; the goddess of those who labour with aching hands; the goddess of poets; the goddess of the gods.

You who live in the gem-like land of pure Tamil! Come, let us gather and worship this goddess! Know that worshipping her here is not easy! Muttering a mantra, stacking books in a row and placing sandal paste and flowers on them - by the shastras, that is not her puja.

The light of learning in every house; one or two schools in every street; many, many schools in all the villages and towns throughout the land; and handing over to the fire any village without learning - know that these are the ways to win the friendship of my Mother, the nectar that ends ruin.

The land of the Huns, the land of the Yavanas, the land that receives the light of the rising sun, far-off China, wealthy ancient Persia, strong-shouldered Turkey, Egypt, and many lands seen beyond the encircling sea - in all of them the light of the goddess of learning rises high.

You were born in the good land of Bharata, which was the very meaning of the word 'wisdom'! Today you do great harm! You have forgotten the labour of high learning! Can living on earth without honour, like beasts, be called living? Do not grieve for what is past; come, let us strive to end this baseness!

Planting groves of sweet fragrant fruit, making cool springs of sweet water, setting up a thousand feeding-houses, founding ten thousand temples, establishing every other charity so that its name shines - a crore times more merit than all of these is teaching one poor person to read and write!

You who have much wealth, give heaps of gold! You who have little, give coins! You who have not even that, give a word of encouragement! You who are strong, give your labour! All you women of honey-sweet speech, speak what befits the worship of Vani! Giving something, in whatever way, come, let us establish this great work!

Explanation

This is Bharathiyar's most famous song to Saraswati. The first four stanzas say where she dwells: not only in the white lotus, the veena and the Veda, but in a child's babble, in the koel's voice, and in the work of smiths, carpenters, sculptors and traders. All skill and knowledge is she. This is the inner meaning of Ayudha Puja at Navaratri, when tools are worshipped.

In the fifth stanza the song turns: 'Stacking books and placing sandal and flowers on them is not her puja.' The true Saraswati puja is a school in every street, and no village without learning. He does not reject the ritual; he asks that its meaning be put into action.

'A crore times more merit than all these is teaching one poor person to read and write' - this line has become a proverb in Tamil Nadu. That the gift of learning is higher than feeding the hungry or building temples is itself a teaching of our tradition: 'vidya danam maha danam'. The last stanza calls everyone - rich, poor, labourers, women - to join this service.

To reflect on

'A crore times more merit is teaching one poor person to read and write' - could you teach someone something this year?
