Meaning
Long live the name of Tilakan! Long live, long live! Down with cruel rule! Down, down! Let the cry of freedom rise in all four directions! Let the slavish life, like hell itself, wear away and perish! Let the darkness that clouds the minds of worthy men vanish! Let fear perish from the world for ever! He built a fortress of the strength called learning, and with good thought he dug the moat around it. He made a temple of what is called the lamp of speech, and on it he hoisted the flag called freedom. He is the boat that crosses the ocean called sorrow; he is the policy that drives away the demon called weariness; he is the fresh flower dripping and brimming with the honey called love; he is the sign that shows the thing called manhood.

Explanation
This is a song of blessing, and its first two lines set two opposite cries face to face: let the name of Tilakan live, let tyranny fall - both in one breath.
The second verse holds one of Bharathiyar's finest images: learning as fortress, speech as temple, freedom as the flag on it. The three are parts of one building, so knowledge, language and liberty cannot be separated.
The third verse offers four images - boat, policy, flower, sign. Praising a man not with a single adjective but by the work he does is Bharathiyar's characteristic way of honouring.
To reflect on
Seeing learning, speech and freedom as one building - what does that vision say to a school today?
