Meaning

Rama! Lord of the four Vedas! You of lotus feet! Grant me the boon of deathlessness.

Sky, fire, wind, water and earth - you fill all these elements alike. If I hold your two feet, which are the one nectar, as my refuge, will this not be granted?

Hero of shapely shoulders! Steadfast one! Beautiful as Manmatha! King of the gods! You whose chest knew the soft shoulders of Sita of honey-sweet speech! Your flower-feet are my support.

Eternal! Stainless! Rama! Spotless one! Support of all! Truth! Ancient, everlasting one! Rama! Generous one! Refuge, refuge, refuge!

Explanation

The boon of deathlessness is a recurring prayer in Bharathiyar - he who sang 'Kala (Death), I regard you as a blade of grass'. Here he seeks it at the feet of Rama. The true deathlessness is not of the body but the soul realising its own undying nature - the state the Gita describes: 'weapons do not cut it'.

The first charanam shows Rama as the Supreme filling the five elements; the second shows the human Rama, hero, beautiful, husband of Sita; the third returns to the Supreme through the Upanishadic names - eternal, stainless, true, sanatana. Like Tyagaraja's kritis, the song weaves together the name of Rama and surrender.

To reflect on

He sings that the one who fills the elements and Sita's husband are the same. Can we think of God as both all-pervading and near at once?
