Meaning

O True One, who took me, a false one, as if I were worth something, and kept my faults covered! Do not forsake me, see! O you whose throat is dark from the poison you drank, O King of Uthirakosamangai that stands for ever! O red-bodied one, O Siva, who ends the round of births of small me!

Explanation

'Kept my faults covered' is a tender phrase. As a mother shields her child with the end of her sari, the Lord covers the devotee's faults and protects him before the world. People love to broadcast faults; it is God's way to cover them.

The rhyming words, 'false one', 'true one', 'dark one', 'red one', give the verse its music. In one verse the false man and the True One meet.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.

To reflect on

Do you cover the faults of others, or spread them?
