Meaning

Even as your ever-growing hand of compassion reaches out to take hold of me, I slip from it and flash away to this side. Do not forsake me, see! O King of Uthirakosamangai, whose long matted crown glows with a shoot of the white crescent moon! O rich flame, whose form is like clear gold and lightning!

Explanation

The Lord's compassion is a 'growing' hand: it never stops, it keeps reaching further. But the soul slips away like a fish and flashes off. The reaching hand and the slipping fish show the play between grace and the soul.

The crescent on Siva's head recalls how he gave shelter to the Moon, wasting away under Daksha's curse. One who set a waning moon on his own head will not let go of a soul that slips away.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.
