Meaning

I do whatever I please, I drink the honey of your compassion and grow drunk with joy, and then I turn stubborn. Do not forsake me, see! Just as you gave me your fragrant flower feet before, command me again, call me to your service and take me, my father! Take away, take away this restless eagerness of mine!

Explanation

There is a subtle truth here: even one who has tasted the sweetness of grace can grow drunk on it and turn stubborn. Spiritual experience itself can become a new source of ego. That is why the poet asks for work: 'command me, call me to serve'.

In Saiva tradition, service is the medicine for ego. Steady work keeps the soul grounded better than floating in bliss. That is why Appar sang, 'My duty is only to serve and stay at it.'

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.
