Meaning

You took away my pride of birth; you took my faults away from me; O my father, whose victorious bow is a mountain! Do not forsake me, see! O Father, with a body like a lovely lotus, wearing a garland of konrai that shines like gold! O you without compare! Like a churning rod whirled in thick curd, I am spun about by the five bonds.

Explanation

'You took away my pride of birth' is central to the Saiva tradition of saints. Among the sixty-three are brahmins, kings, hunters, potters and outcastes; birth means nothing in reaching the Lord. Nandanar merging with the Lord at Thillai is the proof. The poet, born to a family of ministers, also had that pride of birth taken away.

In places Saiva Siddhanta counts five bonds: ego, karma, maya, the products of maya, and the Lord's veiling power. Like a churning rod, these five keep the soul spinning.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.
