Meaning

Like an earthworm caught among ants, I am eaten away by my senses and suffer, empty and alone. Do not forsake me, see! O fragrant flower feet that make cruel Death shrink back! O state that the enlightened reach, high above the highest heavens! O Great One, from whom your devotees never move away!

Explanation

'An earthworm among ants' is another unforgettable image from Thiruvasagam. The worm has no way to fight back; the ants bite from every side and it can only writhe. So is the soul among the senses.

The same verse praises the feet that made Death shrink back, recalling Markandeya. The worm that cannot fight off even ants has, as its help, the feet that defeated Death himself.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.
