Meaning

Listen, girl whose eyes shine with kohl! Vishnu, Brahma and Indra search for him through birth after birth. Yet by his sweet grace he took even me in this very birth and guarded me from being born again. He appears within the true reality; he is truth itself and the state that does not pass; he is himself in every thing; he is the release of all things. That reality is our Siva. Let us sing of him, O ammanai!

Explanation

'He took me in this birth and kept me from being born again' is Manikkavasagar's settled experience. The one the gods could not find in countless births took him in this very life, and he marvels at it. Saiva Siddhanta calls this shaktinipata, the descent of grace on a soul that has ripened. It comes by grace, not by merit.

'Himself in every thing, the release of all' says that the Lord pervades all things and is also where every soul finally arrives. The Taittiriya Upanishad says: that from which these beings are born, by which they live, and into which they return, that is Brahman.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), the chapter on carrying earth; Thiruvathavurar Puranam

The Lord Who Carried Earth for Puttu

The jackals that had come as horses turned back into jackals in the night, howled and ran away. The furious Pandya king made Manikkavasagar stand on the burning sand of the Vaigai riverbed. Then the Lord sent a great flood down the Vaigai. Afraid that Madurai would be drowned, the king ordered every household to send one person to carry earth and close its share of the breach in the bank.

In Madurai lived an old woman named Vanthi who made her living selling puttu, steamed rice flour. She had no one. With no one to fill her share, she cried out, 'Chokkanatha!' A labourer appeared and said, 'Grandmother, I will fill your share. Pay me with the bits of puttu that crumble off.' Delighted, she gave him the puttu. He ate it, sang and danced, tipped his basket over and lay down to sleep, and her share alone stayed open.

The king, inspecting the bank, struck the idler across the back with his cane. The blow fell on the king's own back, on his ministers' backs, and on the back of every living being in the world. The labourer tipped one basket of earth into the gap, the breach closed, and he vanished. Only then did the king understand that the labourer was Chokkanatha himself, and he begged Manikkavasagar's pardon. The Lord gave Vanthi release. When Manikkavasagar sings in this hymn of the Lord 'taking wages for carrying earth', this is the story: the one who bears all the worlds came as a hired hand for a poor old woman.
