Meaning

I will wear the golden konrai flowers; wearing them, I will come to Siva's mighty shoulders; I will hold him close and, lost in love, I will sulk; I will melt for his red lips; melting within, I will search; searching, I will think only of Siva's feet; I will wilt, and I will bloom again. Let us sing of the red feet of the one who dances holding fire, O ammanai!

Explanation

This verse is sung in nayaki bhava, the soul as a bride longing for the Lord. All the moods of love come in a row: union, embrace, sulking, melting, searching, wilting, blooming. Each word returns at the start of the next phrase, so the verse moves like a chain.

The same mood is found in the hymns of Appar and Sambandar and in the songs of Andal. Saiva tradition holds that every soul stands in the place of the bride and the Lord alone is the bridegroom. 'I will wilt, and I will bloom again' is the devotee's life: wilting in separation, blooming again in grace, over and over.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), the chapter on carrying earth; Thiruvathavurar Puranam

The Lord Who Carried Earth for Puttu

The jackals that had come as horses turned back into jackals in the night, howled and ran away. The furious Pandya king made Manikkavasagar stand on the burning sand of the Vaigai riverbed. Then the Lord sent a great flood down the Vaigai. Afraid that Madurai would be drowned, the king ordered every household to send one person to carry earth and close its share of the breach in the bank.

In Madurai lived an old woman named Vanthi who made her living selling puttu, steamed rice flour. She had no one. With no one to fill her share, she cried out, 'Chokkanatha!' A labourer appeared and said, 'Grandmother, I will fill your share. Pay me with the bits of puttu that crumble off.' Delighted, she gave him the puttu. He ate it, sang and danced, tipped his basket over and lay down to sleep, and her share alone stayed open.

The king, inspecting the bank, struck the idler across the back with his cane. The blow fell on the king's own back, on his ministers' backs, and on the back of every living being in the world. The labourer tipped one basket of earth into the gap, the breach closed, and he vanished. Only then did the king understand that the labourer was Chokkanatha himself, and he begged Manikkavasagar's pardon. The Lord gave Vanthi release. When Manikkavasagar sings in this hymn of the Lord 'taking wages for carrying earth', this is the story: the one who bears all the worlds came as a hired hand for a poor old woman.
