Meaning

At Daksha's sacrifice he rubbed the moon under his foot, crushed Indra's shoulder, cut off the head of Yajna, the god of the sacrifice, broke the teeth of the sun that crosses the sky spreading its rays, and gladly drove the gods to scatter in every direction. He dwells at Perunthurai of the southern king, ringed by groves full of red blossoms. Let us sing of his garland of mandara flowers, O ammanai!

Explanation

The breaking of Daksha's sacrifice is told in the Siva Purana and the Kandha Puranam. Daksha held a grand sacrifice and pointedly left out Siva, the husband of his own daughter Dakshayani. She went uninvited, was humiliated, and gave up her body. In his anger the Lord sent Virabhadra, who wrecked the sacrifice, and the gods who had joined in were punished.

The inner sense is that a ritual which shuts out Siva is empty, however grand. Saiva Siddhanta reads it as the fall of anava, the pride that says 'I am the doer' and forgets the Lord. Breaking that pride is also a form of grace.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), the chapter on carrying earth; Thiruvathavurar Puranam

The Lord Who Carried Earth for Puttu

The jackals that had come as horses turned back into jackals in the night, howled and ran away. The furious Pandya king made Manikkavasagar stand on the burning sand of the Vaigai riverbed. Then the Lord sent a great flood down the Vaigai. Afraid that Madurai would be drowned, the king ordered every household to send one person to carry earth and close its share of the breach in the bank.

In Madurai lived an old woman named Vanthi who made her living selling puttu, steamed rice flour. She had no one. With no one to fill her share, she cried out, 'Chokkanatha!' A labourer appeared and said, 'Grandmother, I will fill your share. Pay me with the bits of puttu that crumble off.' Delighted, she gave him the puttu. He ate it, sang and danced, tipped his basket over and lay down to sleep, and her share alone stayed open.

The king, inspecting the bank, struck the idler across the back with his cane. The blow fell on the king's own back, on his ministers' backs, and on the back of every living being in the world. The labourer tipped one basket of earth into the gap, the breach closed, and he vanished. Only then did the king understand that the labourer was Chokkanatha himself, and he begged Manikkavasagar's pardon. The Lord gave Vanthi release. When Manikkavasagar sings in this hymn of the Lord 'taking wages for carrying earth', this is the story: the one who bears all the worlds came as a hired hand for a poor old woman.
