Koyil Puranam (Umapathi Sivacharyar); Chidambara Mahatmya; temple tradition of ThillaiThe Two Sages Who Saw the Dance at Thillai
Long ago Thillai was a forest of thillai trees, and the sage Vyaghrapada lived there. He wanted to pick fresh flowers for the Lord's worship before dawn, before any bee had touched them. So he asked for a tiger's feet to climb trees in the dark, a tiger's claws so the thorns would not hurt him, and eyes that could see at night. That is why he is called the tiger-footed sage.
At the same time, in the ocean of milk, the great serpent Adisesha, Vishnu's bed, heard Vishnu speak with delight of the Lord's dance, and he longed to see it too. Born as Patanjali, half man and half serpent, he came to Thillai to do penance. The two sages worshipped together for many years.
On the day of Poosam in the month of Thai, the Lord appeared with Uma and danced the dance of bliss in the golden hall. One foot raised, a drum in one hand and fire in another, one hand saying 'do not fear' and another pointing to the lifted foot, he danced. The two sages stood weeping. They prayed that this dance might go on here forever, and the Lord granted it. From that day the Lord of Thillai has never stopped dancing. Manikkavasagar spent his last years at Thillai, and seeing the women pound powder at festival time, he sang 'for the bath of the one who dances in the Hall, let us pound the golden powder.'
