Meaning

I want no fame. I want no wealth. I want neither earth nor heaven. I want neither birth nor death. Those who do not want Siva I will never touch. I went and reached him; I have put on the feet of the Lord of abiding Thirupperunthurai. Now I will not go outside, and I will not let him go outside either.

Explanation

This is one of the most famous verses of the Thiruvasagam. 'I do not want' rings out five times. He refuses everything people spend their lives seeking: fame, wealth, heaven. Not only birth but death too he does not want; he does not need even death as a release.

The last line is the summit: 'I will not go; and I will not let him go.' The pain of the guru vanishing at Perunthurai is healed here. Now the Lord is within, and the poet will never let him leave. It is a line of love and of rightful claim together.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thirumoola Nayanar; Thirumandiram (Thirumoolar), preface

Thirumoolar, Who Entered the Body of Moolan

A Siva yogi of Kailasa, a disciple of Nandi, set out on a journey south to see the sage Agastya. When he came to the banks of the Kaveri near Thiruvavaduthurai, he saw something that stopped him. Moolan, a cowherd of Sathanur, lay dead, and the cows he had tended stood around him weeping and lowing.

The yogi's heart melted at the cows' grief. He hid his own body safely in the hollow of a tree and, by yogic power, entered Moolan's body. When the cows saw Moolan rise, they leapt for joy, and he drove them home to the village. When Moolan's wife called him into the house, he said, 'I have no tie with you,' and stayed in a monastery instead.

The next day he went to find his own body, but it had vanished. He understood that this was the Lord's will. Remaining in Moolan's body, he sat beneath a peepal tree at Thiruvavaduthurai in yoga for three thousand years and sang one verse a year, three thousand verses in all. That is the Thirumandiram, the tenth Thirumurai, which holds the famous line 'Love is Siva'.

In Uyirunni Pathu Manikkavasagar sings, 'He entered my body of flesh and mingled with my life.' As a yogi out of compassion entered another's body, so the Lord out of compassion enters the devotee's body and life and stands there, 'having become me'.
