Meaning

He cut away the turmoil that kept coming at me like the waves of the sea, and cut away my impurities; he entered my body and my life and filled them, never to leave. He wears the shining crescent moon and dwells at Thirupperunthurai: this is the trick played by our Supreme One with the crown of spreading matted locks!

Explanation

The mind is like the sea; thoughts rise like waves without rest. The Lord cut away those very waves. Only on a sea whose waves are stilled does the sky show clearly. In the same way the Lord fills a heart from which turmoil has gone.

The word padiru, 'trick', returns. He has 'consumed' the soul, and that is why this is the Uyirunni Pathu. The soul dissolved into him, and he filled the soul.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thirumoola Nayanar; Thirumandiram (Thirumoolar), preface

Thirumoolar, Who Entered the Body of Moolan

A Siva yogi of Kailasa, a disciple of Nandi, set out on a journey south to see the sage Agastya. When he came to the banks of the Kaveri near Thiruvavaduthurai, he saw something that stopped him. Moolan, a cowherd of Sathanur, lay dead, and the cows he had tended stood around him weeping and lowing.

The yogi's heart melted at the cows' grief. He hid his own body safely in the hollow of a tree and, by yogic power, entered Moolan's body. When the cows saw Moolan rise, they leapt for joy, and he drove them home to the village. When Moolan's wife called him into the house, he said, 'I have no tie with you,' and stayed in a monastery instead.

The next day he went to find his own body, but it had vanished. He understood that this was the Lord's will. Remaining in Moolan's body, he sat beneath a peepal tree at Thiruvavaduthurai in yoga for three thousand years and sang one verse a year, three thousand verses in all. That is the Thirumandiram, the tenth Thirumurai, which holds the famous line 'Love is Siva'.

In Uyirunni Pathu Manikkavasagar sings, 'He entered my body of flesh and mingled with my life.' As a yogi out of compassion entered another's body, so the Lord out of compassion enters the devotee's body and life and stands there, 'having become me'.
