Explanation

The first verse of this chapter shows the danger of sweet words. 'Insol', the pleasant word, is generally a virtue that Valluvar praises, and he composed an entire chapter on speaking pleasant words. But here the same sweet word becomes the cause of a fall. The reason is that there is no love behind it. Sweetness of word is not enough; its purpose must also be pure, and Valluvar insists on that.

'Aaythodiyaar' are women wearing carefully chosen bangles. Beauty and ornaments hold a charm. When one is charmed by the charm and the sweet word, one loses one's judgement. The phrase 'anbin vizhaiyaar, porul vizhaiyum' reveals their purpose plainly: what they desire is not the man but what is in his hand.

There is something to see here with humanity. In the position of giving company for wealth, many women were placed there by the circumstances of their lives. What Valluvar blames is not any person but the folly of trusting a contract-like relationship in which there is no love and being deceived by it. Seen this way, the inner aim of the chapter is clear.

In present life the same lesson continues in many forms. Sweet phrases in advertisements, flattery in business, and affection feigned on social media are often aimed at a person's money or attention. Not every sweet word is a token of love.

So before trusting someone who speaks sweetly, we should look quietly at his actions and purposes and then decide. Where sweetness of speech and care in action go together, that is love.

A story

Karthikeyan and the Silk Merchants' Friends

This is an imagined tale set in Kanchipuram.

Karthikeyan was the son of a silk-saree merchant of Kanchipuram. After his father's death he took charge of the shop. During the Brahmotsavam of the Varadaraja Perumal temple, when the whole city was in festival mood, a new crowd began to circle him. They were always smiling and praising him: "Master, who has your skill?"

One of them spoke very sweetly. Her face bloomed when she saw him. "I am happy only when you come," she would say fondly. Karthikeyan bought her jewels and silk sarees. Week by week the expense grew. An old accountant warned him anxiously, but he would not listen.

His close friend Siva asked him gently one day, "Karthi, you say she loves you. But have you seen how she speaks on the day you bring nothing?" Karthikeyan was angry. Yet the question stayed in his mind.

The next week there was a crisis in the business and payment was delayed. When Karthikeyan went to see her, her sweet smile vanished. "You have brought nothing today? Come again later," she said at the door. In that one moment he understood the true meaning of the sweet words.

When he reached home Siva was waiting. He put an arm around him and consoled him. Karthikeyan steadied his business calmly. On the last day of the Brahmotsavam, when the Lord came in procession, he stood in the crowd and made a resolve: before trusting a sweet word, he must weigh its purpose.

The money he lost was small, but the lesson he gained was great. He thought it his good fortune that the sense of warning came to him before his fall.

யாருடைய இனிய சொற்கள் உங்களிடம் என்ன கேட்கின்றன என்பதைக் கவனிக்காமல் நீங்கள் அவற்றை நம்பியிருக்கிறீர்கள்?
