Explanation

Farmers have seasons for sowing and reaping. But Valluvar says there is no season for those who raise a family. The family's duty may call at any time; one cannot wait for a convenient hour. To put off work with 'I do not feel like it today, let us see tomorrow' ruins a family.

The verse points to two foes: one is 'madi', idleness, and the other is regard for 'maanam'. What does 'maanam' mean here? It is a false stubbornness about one's dignity: 'if I do this work my pride will fall' or 'if I ask him for help my standing will go', and so neglecting the family's need. Commentators explain it as regarding as lowly a task that would help the household.

True honour is to be ready to do any honest work for the welfare of one's family. True dishonour is to stand aside minding one's prestige while one's family goes hungry. Valluvar does not condemn honour here; he corrects a wrong understanding of it. Today a head of family who waits because 'this job does not suit my education', or one who hesitates to ask for help and so loses a child's schooling, belongs to this kind. The courage to do what is needed when it is needed is the life of a family.

A story

Kuchela and Susheela

This is the story of Kuchela from the Bhagavata Purana. Kuchela, also called Sudama, was a poor Brahmin who had studied with Krishna in the gurukulam. Now he lay in poverty. His wife Susheela struggled to feed their many children.

One day Susheela said to her husband: "Isn't your friend Krishna the king of Dwaraka? Go to him and ask for help." Kuchela hesitated. "With what face shall I go and ask him? To stand before him telling of my poverty is a disgrace to me. He is a great king now."

Susheela answered quietly: "When the children are starving, what use is pride? There is nothing wrong in going with the right of friendship. Do not ask; just go and see him. Your friend will understand for himself." Then she borrowed three handfuls of flattened rice from the neighbours, tied it in an old cloth and gave it to him.

Kuchela went to Dwaraka. The guards hesitated to let him in, but when Krishna saw him he ran and embraced him. He seated him on his own throne, washed his feet and bowed to him. He ate the flattened rice from Kuchela's cloth, saying, "How sweet is this rice my friend has brought me!"

All the way back Kuchela was sad that he had not mentioned his poverty. But as he entered his village, he was amazed to find a mansion where his hut had stood. Susheela, in fine clothes, welcomed him with a smile. Krishna had given grace without being asked.

In this story Kuchela's pride was a barrier to his family's need. Susheela's clarity broke the barrier. It shows kindly that for those who build up their family there is no season and no place for false dignity.
