Explanation

Everyone who stands in battle formation is a warrior. But the burden of the front line falls on the shoulders of the courageous, and the rest stand behind trusting them. Valluvar fits this simile to the family. All in a family are members, but the load of the family naturally rests on the one with the strength to carry it.

The word 'porai' means both burden and forbearance. One who holds up the family must carry the load and also bear the hardships that come with it. One may ask whether that is fair. Valluvar does not see it as a question of fairness but as the nature of things. That the load comes to the strong is an unavoidable way of the world.

A mind that accepts this shows Valluvar's compassion. Instead of lamenting 'why me alone with such a burden?', accepting proudly that 'it came to me because I can bear it' gives the bearer strength. At the same time there is a hidden counsel that others should not exploit the carrier's strength but share in the load. In families today we see one person caring for parents, helping siblings and educating children. It is the duty of the others to recognise the weight on that person's shoulders and to lend a shoulder themselves.

A story

Out of Varanavata

This is the lac-house episode in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. Duryodhana sent the Pandavas to the town of Varanavata and had them lodged in a palace built of lac, which catches fire easily. His plan was to set it ablaze at night and destroy them. Vidura learned of it and warned Yudhishthira in a coded tongue.

Yudhishthira understood. A miner sent by Vidura helped to dig a tunnel. One night, as expected, the palace was set alight. Bhima himself fired the place in a way that let the family escape.

Groping in the dark through the tunnel, Kunti tired. Nakula and Sahadeva were small. Bhima lifted his mother on one shoulder and Nakula and Sahadeva on the other. He held Yudhishthira and Arjuna by each hand. The Mahabharata says he carried them thus through the forest the whole night.

Bhima was the family's strong shoulder. No one asked him; he took the load on himself naturally. He did not show on his face the weariness of his brothers or his mother's grief. He shared with no one the weight he carried.

This is like the soldier standing in the front line in battle. In the family's peril, the burden falls on the one with strength; and when he bears it without complaint, the family survives. Bhima's shoulders are a direct witness to this verse of Valluvar.
