Explanation

This verse is a hopeful statement about the power of effort. Planning is needed, but Valluvar says that unflagging effort pays more than holding a plan and not stepping into action. 'Soozhaamal' means without deliberating. That is, even if one has not calculated every step in advance, the work comes to completion by itself if one persists.

We must understand this carefully. It does not praise carelessness; Valluvar himself stresses deliberation in other chapters. What is said here is different: if the purpose of raising the family is pure and the effort does not slacken, answers to the difficulties that arise come on their own. Many wait until a full plan is ready; those who start find their way as they walk.

Commentators also see the share of divine help in it. As a continuation of the previous verse, where God stepped ahead, here the work reaches completion by itself. Together the two verses give the belief that the labour of building a family is not one person's burden alone. The meaning for today is plain: instead of waiting until we feel fully prepared to start a business, build a house or continue studies, starting with unflagging effort lets the ways open. No amount of knowledge turns an unstarted plan into action.

A story

The Hoe of Service

This is an episode from the life of Appar, also called Thirunavukkarasar, told in the Periya Puranam. Appar returned to Shaivism after a time in Jainism, and his devotion to Lord Shiva was deep. Carrying in his hand a small hoe called the uzhavaram, he cleared grass and thorn from temple precincts wherever he went. This is known as uzhavarap paNi, the service of the hoe.

He went from town to town visiting Shiva shrines. Wherever he went, the hoe in his hand worked without rest. He had no great plan. He had only the simple wish, 'May this temple precinct be clean.' He did it every day.

Tradition says that to test his resolve, Lord Shiva made gold and gems appear where Appar was clearing the weeds, and Appar threw them aside like pebbles and went on with his work. Wealth did not turn his effort aside.

That small service, which began as one man's work, in time became a great movement. Even now in Tamil Nadu devotees gather in groups to do uzhavaram service in temples. Appar made no plan; yet his unflagging effort became a tradition continuing for a thousand years and more.

This may be taken as a witness to Valluvar's 'soozhaamal thaane mudiveythum'. A simple good work done tirelessly spreads far beyond what its doer expected and shows the way to others.

Even when there is no grand plan for the service of one's family and society, if one keeps at it, God will complete it: that is the faith Appar's hoe gives us.
