Explanation

In this verse Valluvar gives manliness a new definition. Many may think that winning battles, subduing others and earning fame is manliness. But in Valluvar's view true manliness lies in taking up the responsibility for the family one was born into and making it prosper. 'Illaanmai' is the quality of governing a household. To govern here is not to exercise authority but to take responsibility.

The qualifier 'thaan pirandha', the one he was born into, is important. It means we are first to make flourish not a family of our choice but the one that fate gave us by birth. Without being weary of its faults, one should develop its strengths and hand it on to the next generation in a better state. A man who makes a great name outside but is of no use at home has a flawed manliness.

Commentators take 'aanmai' as agency or strength. So the verse is not only for men but for anyone who takes up the burden of a family. Mother, sister, daughter, whoever holds up and raises the family has true manliness. In today's life, caring for the elderly of one's home, teaching children good character and keeping relationships bound together may matter more than earning well in a faraway city. The real test of success begins at the doorstep of one's home.

A story

Rama's Duty

This scene is from the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. The Ikshvaku clan that ruled Ayodhya was proud. Its kings were famed for keeping their word. By a boon King Dasharatha had once given Kaikeyi, Rama had to go to the forest for fourteen years. The coronation was to be held the next day.

The burden of fulfilling his father's promise was bound up with the honour of the clan. When Rama came to Kaikeyi's palace, he found his father fallen in grief. On learning the reason, his face did not change at all. "Father, your word must be kept. I shall go to the forest," he said quietly.

Lakshmana was furious. "Brother, Father is faltering with age. Fight and take the kingdom," he said. Rama calmed him: "Brother, if a clan's word fails, the clan's very name fails. Keeping Father's promise is my duty."

Rama knew that losing the kingdom was a great loss to himself. But what he held greater was the standing of his clan. If he sat on the throne, his father's word would turn false; Dasharatha's name would be stained; the glory of the Ikshvaku line would shrink. So he went gladly to the forest.

Even as he set out in bark clothing, Rama's face was calm. He always valued the honour of his house above himself. That is why the people waited for fourteen years for his return.

Rama's choice is a full example that raising the manliness of the house one was born into lies not in physical strength but in giving up one's comforts to keep the word of one's clan.
