Explanation

The opening verse of the chapter names the first qualification for raising a family: unflagging resolve. 'Kai thooven' is a beautiful phrase. To 'thoovu' is to drop or shake off. It is the opposite of the attitude that shakes the hand free and walks away. It is easy to let go when work grows difficult, results are delayed or others mock. To one who does not let go even then, Valluvar gives this highest place.

The 'greatness' here is not fame. It is the self-respect one has, loyalty to the responsibility one has taken up. One who raises a family works not only for himself but to carry forward the path laid down by his forefathers and to leave a better chance for his descendants. His labour thus becomes not a private effort but a continuing duty.

There is a subtlety: in 'karumam seya' the work is not yet finished; it is going on. Resolve is needed not only at the start but in the middle, when weariness comes. Many are firm at the beginning and tire halfway. The mindset that conquers that weariness is what is called greatness here. In practical life we need this daily. Clearing a family's debt, saving for a child's education, caring for the elderly are all long journeys. A mind that does not drop its hand saying 'enough for today', and carries on to tomorrow, is the backbone of a family.

A story

Mainaka and Hanuman

This scene is from the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Hanuman set out to cross the southern ocean in search of Sita, a sea a hundred yojanas wide. As he leapt into the sky, the mountain Mainaka, hidden beneath the waves, wished to help him. Once, when Indra clipped the wings of the mountains, Vayu had saved Mainaka by hiding him in the sea. In gratitude Mainaka longed to help Vayu's son.

Rising from the sea as a golden peak, Mainaka invited him lovingly: "Hanuman, you have flown a long way and are tired. Rest a while on my summit. There are fruits and roots. Then go on." The invitation was sincere; the host meant well. Anyone in that position would feel tempted to rest.

Hanuman touched the mountain gently with his hand and bowed. "Friend, thank you for your love. But until Rama's work is done I have no rest. I have vowed not to stop midway," he said and flew on. Mainaka blessed him and saw him off.

A little further on, Surasa, a woman of the serpent race, opened a huge mouth to stop him. Hanuman did not argue; he made himself small, slipped into her mouth and came out again. Next the rakshasi Simhika seized his shadow and dragged at him. He overcame her too and continued.

At every obstacle his resolve did not change. Neither favour nor threat nor rest moved him from his goal. That single thought, 'until my task is done', carried him all the way to Lanka.

This is the greatness Valluvar calls 'kai thooven'. A resolve that affectionately refuses even a pleasant invitation to rest in the middle of the labour opens the way to any great goal. In the long task we do for our family and clan, the same resolve is needed.
