Explanation

This verse stresses the link between raising a family and dharma. One should not think that a family may be raised by any means. Valluvar first puts down the condition 'kutram ilanaay', being without fault. One who raises his family by harming others and gathering wealth wrongly is not a family-builder but one who has piled up wrongs in the family's name.

What does the world give to one who has lived blamelessly? 'Sutramaach chutrum,' says Valluvar: the world surrounds him as if he were its own kin. Even if he has no relatives, those who come to help come like relatives. When a loving person does good to others, it is natural for people to love him. That love becomes his great wealth.

Two truths lie here. First, family-building is a beneficial endeavour, not one for private gain alone. Second, the regard society gives to an honest life is lasting. People may fear or praise one who rose by wrong means, but they do not truly love him. In today's society we see many who live honestly and advance their families. The natural respect and closeness we feel for them is the essence of this verse. The way in which we seek our family's rise decides how many kinsmen the world will give us.

A story

Mount Govardhana

This is the Govardhana episode of the Bhagavata Purana. The cowherds of Gokula customarily held a sacrifice every year for Indra. The boy Krishna said to them, "Are not our cows, our grazing land and Mount Govardhana what protect us? Let us give thanks to them." The herders agreed and, in place of Indra's sacrifice, offered a feast to Mount Govardhana.

Angered, Indra sent torrential rain on Gokula. Thunder, lightning and floods followed. The herders were afraid and the cattle trembled. They ran to Krishna.

Krishna rose calmly and lifted Mount Govardhana on his little finger like an umbrella. "All of you, come and shelter under the mountain," he called. The herders, cows and children took shelter under the mountain for seven days. Heedless of hunger or tiredness, he held the mountain all seven days.

At last Indra realised his mistake and begged Krishna's pardon. The rain stopped and Gokula was restored. From that day Krishna was honoured as Govinda. To the herders he was both kinsman and leader.

Krishna was only a boy of the herding clan. But he took up the responsibility of protecting his people without fault. He did not seek his own glory but used all his strength for the safety of the simple cowherds. So they all loved him as their very life.

As Valluvar says, the world surrounds like kin the man who raises his house blamelessly. The picture of the people of Gokula standing around Krishna is a beautiful illustration.
