Explanation

This verse is a sigh in the form of a question. Valluvar feels pity for the man who keeps his family's faults and failings from being seen, who takes upon himself the lapses of his children, who carries a kinsman's trouble within himself. 'Idumpaikke kolkalam', a vessel for hardships alone, is a sorrowful simile for a container made only for troubles.

Its sense is taken in two ways. One is compassion: the bodies of such people always receive only suffering. The other is praise: a body fit to receive suffering. Commentators see both. Either way, it is clear that Valluvar honours the sacrifice of one who bears hardship for his family.

We must also note carefully what 'hiding the family's fault' means. It does not encourage wrongdoing. It is the effort to keep the family from disgrace before others, while inwardly the duty of correcting the fault is also his. He plays a double role, a shield outside and a teacher within. In daily life we see such people: parents who apologise to others for their children's mistakes, an elder brother who works to clear a sibling's debt, a mother who quietly carries a family problem. The best respect we can pay them is to recognise their silent sacrifice and thank them.

A story

Kunti at Ekachakra

This episode is from the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. Having escaped from the lac house, the Pandavas lived in hiding with their mother in the town of Ekachakra, lodging in a Brahmin's house. A rakshasa named Baka tormented the town. By agreement the townsfolk had to send him a cartload of food and one man each day.

One day it was this Brahmin family's turn. The whole house was in tears. The Brahmin said, "I will go; let my family live." His wife said, "I will go; you must protect the family." Their daughter said, "Send me," and their little son said, "I shall go." Kunti heard all this from her room.

Kunti came before them. "You gave us shelter. In gratitude, one of my five sons will go on your behalf." The Brahmin refused: "We do not send our guests to save our lives." Kunti said calmly, "My son Bhima has the strength to defeat that rakshasa. Do not worry."

Sending her son into danger is not easy for a mother. But Kunti buried her sorrow within herself for the debt of gratitude her family owed. When Yudhishthira hesitated, she persuaded him. Bhima fought the rakshasa and won, and the townsfolk were safe.

All through that time Kunti did not show outwardly the danger her sons were in or the pain it caused her. To keep the family's honour she took her sorrows inside.

Though she lived as a vessel only for hardships, Kunti's firmness in guarding the family's good name and debt of gratitude is a living commentary on this verse.
