Explanation

In this verse the heroine reproaches her heart gently but firmly. The heart has seen that the hero is incompatible with her and shows no love. Even so it goes to him. She guesses a reason for its going: 'seraar', that is, the heart thinks that he will not be angry. In this thought the heart's simple trust and its ignorance appear together.

Commentators take 'uraadhavar' in two ways. One sense is one who does not unite with her in love. The other is one who is not close to her. Both point to the indifference he shows her. The heart has seen it, and yet forgets.

Here the heroine treats the heart like a little child. As a child, though struck once, runs again to the same place, the heart forgets its pain and runs to him. In that running there is pure trust, and that is the very thing that pains her.

In our own lives, too, there are times when our mind places trust even in someone who does not respect us. Recognising them, it is better not to regard the mind's simple trust as a fault, but to learn to protect and guide it. Trust is a virtue; the lesson to learn is in whom to place it.

Valluvar mixes compassion into the heroine's reproach and records gently the childlike nature of the heart. The verse leaves us with a quiet question that applies to all of us: what do we expect from those whom we keep going back to?

A story

A Wait at the Mahamaham Tank

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

At Kumbakonam the Mahamaham festival is a great festival held once in twelve years. On that holy day people gather from many towns and bathe in the tank. A young woman named Pavai had come to the festival with her father. In her mind alone there was a small thorn.

Her beloved Kandan had spoken lovingly to her earlier; but for some months he had begun to show indifference to her. No replies to letters; no smile even when he saw her. Pavai's reason said, 'He no longer respects you; withdraw.'

But in the Mahamaham crowd her eyes sought him of themselves. 'Where is he? Might he have come?' her heart asked. She reproached herself: 'O heart, you know that he does not respect you. Why do you go to him, thinking that he will not be angry?'

As she stood at the edge of the tank, Kandan's face appeared in the midst of the crowd. He saw her; but he gave only a small nod and turned away. Pavai's heart shrank in grief. Yet in a moment her reason awoke.

She bathed in the holy water, held her father's hand, and prayed within, 'On this day that comes once in twelve years let me purify my mind too.' Her heart slowly cleared.

The story shows that the right way is not to treat the heart's simple trust as a fault but to give it the company of reason.

To reflect on

Where does your heart keep returning to someone who has shown indifference, and what would give it better company?
