Explanation

The final verse of the chapter continues the previous one; it sets the same truth from another angle. When one's own heart is not kin, not one's own, it is no wonder that strangers are not kin. 'Thanjam' means easy or no wonder. 'Thamar' is a kinsman, one who is one's own. 'Edhilaar' is a stranger, one with no connection.

The logic of the verse is simple. When our own heart is not ours, it is wrong to expect strangers, who have no connection with us, to be kin. Kinship must first be within; only then does it come to be outside. This idea confirms the lesson of the previous verse and brings the chapter to a complete close.

Commentators take this verse also as the heroine's speech; the source text marks it as the hero's. Whether the hero says it or the heroine, the idea is the same. For one who stands in conflict with himself there is no use in expecting support from others.

If we join this verse to our own lives, before complaining that others do not understand us we may ask whether we have understood ourselves. One who knows himself and is at peace with himself can easily find harmony with others.

Thus Valluvar closes a chapter on love with the high thought that inner kinship is the base of all kinship. It is a fitting end to a chapter that began as a quarrel and ends as a lesson in friendship with oneself.

A story

Vibhishana in Ravana's Court

This is a part of the story of Vibhishana found in the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana and in Kamban's Ramavataram.

After Ravana carried off Sita, the danger of a great war arose in Lanka. Hanuman had set Lanka aflame and gone; word came that Rama's army was crossing the sea. Ravana held counsel in his court. Many ministers spoke to please Ravana.

Vibhishana, Ravana's younger brother, stood on the path of dharma. He rose in the assembly and said lovingly, 'Brother, hand Sita over to Rama and find peace; this is good for Lanka and for us.' Ravana, in great anger, spoke scornfully of Vibhishana and told him to leave the assembly, the epic says.

Ravana's own mind was not a companion to him; it was full of pride and desire. His own brother, who had come to give good counsel, went away from him. Vibhishana, with four ministers, took refuge with Rama. Tradition honours that Rama accepted him with love.

Because Ravana did not overcome the pride of his mind, even his kinsmen forsook him. At the end of the war he fell. Valluvar's saying that when one's own heart is not kin, strangers will not be kin becomes true in this tale in a hard form.

The tale reminds us how important it is, in the wrong tendencies of our own mind, to have the humility to hear good counsel.

The Vibhishana story also gives the hope that one who stands on the path of dharma will, wherever he is, in the end find his place.

When Vibhishana took refuge with Rama, many, including Sugriva, hesitated to trust him. Tradition says Rama gave the assurance that he would never abandon one who had taken refuge.
