Explanation

In this verse the heroine's heart appears as her enemy. When she is alone and begins to think of the hero, her heart begins to eat her up. 'Thiniya' means to eat, to devour. The heart, an organ that should protect her, works as if gnawing at her. Each memory bites into her mind.

The role of solitude is important here. In a crowd memories stay quiet; when alone they swell up. Silence, instead of being a comfort, becomes the channel through which memories flood. Valluvar says this human experience beautifully in two lines.

Commentators take 'ennai thiniya' in two ways: it will distress her body, and it will torment her very life. Both show the depth of the sorrow. Though the heroine shows her heart as an enemy, she does not forget that it is her own heart; the closing 'en nenju' says so.

In our lives, too, when alone at night, old memories, worries and imaginings gather together and torment us. At such times, rather than fighting them, it helps to turn them aside by gentle means such as music, worship and conversation with a friend.

Valluvar here shows the cruelty of solitude and the depth of love within it together. The verse is a quiet reminder to be gentle with those who are alone and to offer company before the heart begins to eat at them.

A story

The Yaksha on Ramagiri

This story follows Kalidasa's poem Meghaduta.

A yaksha who was a servant of Kubera failed in his duty. For that Kubera cursed him to live for a year far away, parted from his wife. He began to live on a mountain called Ramagiri. His beloved wife remained alone in Alakapuri.

Many months passed. The yaksha sat alone on the mountain top. The bangle on his arm slackened and fell; his body grew thin. The memory of his wife tormented him night and day. He blamed his own heart: 'When I sit alone and think of her, this heart eats me up.'

On the first day of the month of Ashadha a dark cloud appeared in the sky as if butting the mountain peak. Seeing that cloud, the yaksha thought of sending it as his messenger. 'Lovers do not distinguish between the living and the lifeless,' Kalidasa says here with charm.

The yaksha bows to the cloud and describes the way from Ramagiri to Alakapuri: rivers, mountains, cities, temples; he shows all of them beautifully. Then he tells the cloud the state of his wife and the message of comfort that must be given to her.

In his words the sorrow of the heart and the depth of love ring together. By sending a messenger he somewhat soothed the state in which the heart in solitude torments itself.

The Meghaduta is honoured as among the best poems of separation in Indian literature. In each of its verses the feeling of solitude of Valluvar's heroine echoes.

The Meghaduta has two parts, the Purvamegha and the Uttaramegha. The first describes the way; the second the beauty of Alakapuri and the state of the yaksha's wife.
