Explanation

In this verse the heroine addresses her heart with a mix of warning and mockery. 'Thuni seydhu thuvvaay' means without sulking and savouring it. That is, there is a flavour in uniting after sulking; but the heart does not experience this flavour and runs straight to union. 'Who will take counsel with you hereafter in such an act?' she asks; that is, no one will confer with such a heart.

There is a charming contradiction here. The heart should be the heroine's counsellor; but since it goes its own way each time, no one will trust it. 'Soozhthal' means to deliberate, and also to plot; here she treats sulking as a small plan and laughs about who will join her in it.

Commentators take 'thuvvaay' in two ways. One is not experiencing the sulk. The other is not enduring the sulk. Both point to the heart's weakness.

In our lives too there are moments when our mind breaks a resolve and leaves it unfulfilled, so that we feel we can no longer plan relying on it. At such times it is wise to plan taking our mind's nature into account.

Valluvar shows in this verse the heroine's humour and the heart's sweet weakness together.

A story

A Plan to Sulk on Karthigai Deepam

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village near Tiruvannamalai lived a young woman named Sudar and her husband Nilavan. The day before the festival of Karthigai Deepam, Nilavan went to the hill with his friends and returned late. Sudar was hurt. It was she who had set the clay lamps in a row in the courtyard; but he was not near.

Sudar told her younger sister Nila her plan: 'Today I am going to sulk with him. For a while I shall not speak. Only if he comes and pleads lovingly shall I speak.' Nila laughed: 'Sister, will your heart join this plan?' Sudar nodded firmly.

When Nilavan came home he arrived with a handful of flowers and a smile. Sudar turned her face away. But her heart ran to him at once. She tried to hide the smile that came to her face and failed. Nilavan saw it and laughed. 'Where is the sulking plan?' Nila asked softly.

Shyly Sudar said, 'My heart did not listen to me.' Nila said with a laugh, 'Hereafter who will take your heart into your plans?'

That evening the lamp was lit on the hill of Tiruvannamalai. With the lamps in the courtyard of the house, Sudar and Nilavan stood side by side and bowed to that light.

The story shows with a smile that though the plan to sulk failed, love won.
