Explanation

In this verse the heroine notes another trait of her heart. Her heart thinks it a disgrace to scorn the hero. So, without thinking of his faults, it thinks only of his virtues. 'Ellin' means if one scorns; 'ilivu' means disgrace; 'uyirkkaadhal nenju' is a heart whose love is equal to life. Even if the hero has erred, the heart does not dwell on it; it thinks of his good qualities and honours him.

The heroine who in the earlier verses scolded her heart now sees its honest quality. It does not reproach the hero; it carries his worth in memory. This change is a gentle turn in the chapter. She who began accusing now begins to value the heart's love.

Commentators take it in two ways. One is that the heart has so much love that it cannot reproach him. The other is that the heart thinks that scorning him would be scorning itself. In the second sense the heart's wisdom and clarity show.

In our lives, too, a mind that thinks of the virtues of a loved one rather than their faults grows the relationship. To say clearly where it must be said, and at other times to keep their good qualities in mind, is the mark of balanced love.

Valluvar here gently shifts from a voice that blames the heart to a voice that praises its fidelity. The change is not a surrender; it is the first sign that the quarrel with the heart is turning into friendship with it.

A story

Sati at the Yajna of Daksha

This is a part of the story of Sati and Daksha told in the Bhagavata Purana and in the Shiva Purana tradition.

The Puranas say that Daksha Prajapati, a son of Brahma, gave his daughter Sati in marriage to Lord Shiva. But in time a rift arose between Daksha and Shiva. Daksha arranged a great yajna; he did not invite his daughter Sati nor his son-in-law Shiva to it.

Learning that the devas and sages were going to the yajna, Sati wished to go to her father's house. 'One may go to a father's house even without an invitation,' she said. Lord Shiva warned that her course was not good; yet, respecting her wish, he sent her, the story continues.

At the yajna hall Sati saw that no place and no share of the offering had been set aside for Shiva. Daksha spoke scornfully of Shiva. To Sati those words were unbearable. 'I do not wish to live with this body that hears my lord scorned,' she said resolutely, and gave up her body in the fire of yoga.

Hearing the news, Lord Shiva was filled with grief and anger. The Puranas say he sent Virabhadra to destroy the yajna. Later, at the request of the devas, Daksha was given life again and the yajna was completed, tradition says. Sati was born again as Parvati and attained Shiva once more.

Sati's heart loved her beloved more than life, so that she could not bear his being scorned. The thought of Valluvar's heroine's heart, 'it would be a disgrace if I scorned', is a gentle form of the same quality.

The Shaiva tradition honours Sati as a high example of the firmness of love; devotees respectfully accept the many variants of the story.
