Explanation

This verse states the deep psychology of the loving heart in two simple lines. The loving heart has two fears always: the fear that it may not get its beloved, and the fear, after getting him, that he may part. Because fear stands both before getting and after getting, the heart's suffering never ends. 'Araa' means unbroken, not ceasing. 'Idumbai' is suffering.

A contradiction shows here: the mind that thinks the joy is in getting the beloved finds no peace even after getting. It is the nature of love to be joined with the sense that it can be lost. The fear of losing what we desire greatly arises naturally.

Commentators see this verse as a general truth about the nature of the heart. They also hold that the fear of the loving heart is a sign of love. Love without fear may be superficial; deep love trembles at the thought of loss.

In our own lives we know the fear before the result of an examination and the fear of keeping success after it is won. Even if we cannot wholly destroy that fear, it is wise to understand that it is the other side of love and to enjoy the time we have fully.

Valluvar here records the sorrow of the heart both subtly and universally. The verse is not a complaint against love but a portrait of its price, and the heroine's calm naming of it is a kind of courage.

A story

A Fear on the Night of Thiruvathirai

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a town near Chidambaram lived a young woman named Poonkuzhali. She loved a man named Ilamaran. Ilamaran was a dancer who went from town to town dancing in temples. On the night of Thiruvathirai the Arudra Darshan takes place at the Nataraja temple in Chidambaram. Knowing that Ilamaran would dance there that day, Poonkuzhali went there with her father.

Before entering the temple her heart throbbed with fear. On one side was the fear: 'Will he see me? Will he accept me?'; on the other: 'If he sees me, he will go away again from town to town; then what shall I do?' The two fears whirled in her heart bound to each other.

That night Ilamaran's dance was most beautiful. At the end of the dance his glance fell on Poonkuzhali in the midst of the crowd. He smiled. Poonkuzhali's first fear vanished; but the second rose at once.

Her grandmother, beside her, sensed this. 'Kuzhali, Nataraja is always dancing; and yet this world stands. See the changes that come also as part of his dance. Enjoy today what you have today,' she said gently.

Poonkuzhali looked at the dance of Nataraja and peacefully handed over her fear. That night her mind cleared somewhat.

The story gently shows the fears that come in love before getting and after getting.
