Explanation

In this verse the heroine openly admits her state: I have even forgotten modesty. Modesty is for her a quality as important as life. If she has forgotten it, the depth of her state is clear. She lays the cause on her heart: 'maana madanenju'. Having fallen under the sway of a heart that has not learned to forget him, an unworthy and foolish heart, she says she lost modesty.

'Maana' means without greatness, and 'madam' means ignorance or youthfulness. 'Avar marakkallaa' means 'that has not learned to forget him'. The heart is pictured as a pupil that has never learned the lesson of forgetting his memory. This humorous metaphor adds charm to the verse.

Here the heroine laying her fault on the heart is partly an attempt to escape and partly an admission of the truth. She does not wholly separate herself from the heart; she says 'my heart'. This double quality gives the verse the fragrance of human nature.

In our lives, too, we say of some of our acts, 'My mind would not listen.' That may be a comfort or a truth. To know the nature of one's mind and to act accordingly is the beginning of responsibility.

Valluvar here joins the worth of modesty and the strength of love in one small verse. The gentleness of her self-judgement is also worth noticing: she calls her heart foolish, but there is no hatred in the word, only the exasperated affection of one who knows she will not change it.

A story

The Chariot of Ani Thirumanjanam

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

At the Nataraja temple of Chidambaram the chariot festival is an important event of the Ani Thirumanjanam festival held in the month of Ani. A young woman named Annam came with her family to see the festival. At home she had a name for always being modest and for shrinking even from looking up outside.

Among the young men taking hold of the chariot rope in the street was one named Veeran. He had once come to Annam's town; the two had spoken a few words. After that he had gone to another town for work; years passed. Today, seeing him suddenly at the chariot rope, Annam's heart trembled.

She stood near her mother. But her feet of themselves went forward into the front of the crowd. Without knowing it she stood near the chariot looking at the young men holding the rope. The women around looked in wonder; they had not expected one so reserved to come forward like this today.

Veeran looked at her. A smile bloomed on his face. In that moment Annam realised where she stood. Her face reddened; she drew back quickly and hid behind her mother. 'My heart did not listen to me; it pulled me forward,' she laughed within herself.

Her mother, sensing her state, smiled. 'Modesty is no fault; but love is no fault either,' she said softly. Within a few months the two families spoke and agreed to the wedding.

The story gently shows that the pull of the heart may sometimes make one forget even modesty, and that there is no fault in it.
