எட்டுத் திசைகளையும் ஒரு நொடியில் வலம் வந்த அற்புதத் தோகை மயிலே! ஆயிரம் படமுடிகள் கொண்ட பாம்பின் உடல் துவளும்படி கவ்விப் பிடித்து ஆடும் மயிலே! பேரழகுடைய நவவீரர்களும் வீரபத்திரரும் பத்திரகாளியும் வணங்கும் மயிலே! வலிய வைரவர் "சரணம்" என்று போற்றக் கலகலவென்று ஆடும் மயிலே! தீயவரை வென்று நல்லோரைத் தளராது காக்கும் மயிலே! துதிக்கும் அடியேனின் உள்ளத்து வேண்டுதல் நிறைவேறத் "தொந்தோம்" என்று ஆடும் மயிலே! அறிவுடையோர் போற்றும் குறவள்ளியும் தெய்வயானையும் மனம் மகிழும் மயிலே! திருப்போரூரில் வாழும் கந்தப்பர் ஏறி வரும் அழகிய தோகை மயிலே!

O peacock, the nine handsome heroes, Veerabhadra and Bhadrakali bow to you! O peacock, you dance with a jingling sound while mighty Bhairava praises you as his refuge! O peacock, you conquer the wicked and tirelessly protect the good! O peacock, you dance 'thom thom' so that the prayer in the heart of me, your servant, is fulfilled! "எட்டுத் திசையையும் ஒரு நொடியில் வலம் வந்த" என்ற முதல் அடி மாங்கனிக் கதையை நினைவூட்டுகிறது. அந்தக் கதை எட்டாம் பாடலில் விரிவாக வருகிறது. இங்கே மயிலின் வேகம் மட்டும் போற்றப்படுகிறது. மயில் பாம்பைக் கவ்விப் பிடிப்பது முருகனின் திருவுருவங்களில் அடிக்கடி காணப்படும் காட்சி. ஆயிரம் தலைப் பாம்பு கூட மயிலின் பிடியில் துவள்கிறது.

நவவீரர்கள் முருகனின் படைத்தலைவர்கள்; வீரபத்திரரும் பத்திரகாளியும் வைரவரும் சிவபெருமானின் வீர வடிவங்கள். இவர்கள் எல்லாரும் மயிலை வணங்குகின்றனர். மயிலை வணங்குவது முருகனை வணங்குவதே என்பதுதான் பொருள்.

இவ்வளவு பெரிய மயில் ஆறாம் அடியில் ஒரு சிறிய அடியவனின் உள்ளத்து வேண்டுதலுக்காக "தொந்தோம்" என்று ஆடுகிறது. "துட்டரை ஜெயங்கொண்டு சிஷ்ட பரிபாலனம்" என்பது பகவத் கீதையில் கண்ணன் சொல்லும் "நல்லோரைக் காத்தல், தீயோரை அழித்தல்" என்ற வாக்கை நினைவூட்டுகிறது.

Explanation

The first line, 'you circled the eight directions in a single moment', recalls the story of the mango, which the eighth verse tells in full. Here only the peacock's speed is praised. A peacock gripping a serpent in its beak is a common sight in images of Murugan; even a thousand-headed serpent goes limp in its hold.

The nine heroes are Murugan's commanders. Veerabhadra, Bhadrakali and Bhairava are fierce forms from Shiva's own household. All of them bow to the peacock. To honour the peacock is to honour Murugan himself.

Yet in the sixth line this mighty peacock dances 'thom thom' for the sake of one small devotee's prayer. The phrase 'conquering the wicked and protecting the good' echoes Krishna's words in the Bhagavad Gita about why the Lord comes down to the world: to protect the good and destroy the wicked.

கந்த புராணத்திலிருந்து. சிவபெருமானின் நெற்றிக்கண் தீப்பொறிகள் சரவணப் பொய்கையில் ஆறு குழந்தைகளாகத் தோன்றின. அவற்றைக் காண வந்த பார்வதி அம்மை விரைந்து நடந்தபோது, அவள் கால் சிலம்பு அதிர்ந்து அதிலிருந்த நவரத்தின மணிகள் சிதறி விழுந்தன.

சிதறிய ஒவ்வொரு மணியிலிருந்தும் ஒரு கன்னி தோன்றினாள். அன்னையின் அருளால் அந்த ஒன்பது கன்னியரும் சிவபெருமானைக் கண்டு நின்றபோது, அவர்களிடமிருந்து ஒன்பது வீரர்கள் பிறந்தனர். அவர்களில் முதல்வன் வீரபாகு; மற்றவர்கள் வீரகேசரி, வீரமகேந்திரன், வீரமகேசன், வீரபுரந்தரன், வீரராக்கதன், வீரமார்த்தாண்டன், வீராந்தகன், வீரதீரன். அவர்களோடு இலட்சக்கணக்கான வீரர்களும் தோன்றினர்.

இந்த நவவீரர்கள் முருகனின் தம்பியரும் படைத்தலைவர்களும் ஆனார்கள். சூரனோடு நடந்த போரில் வீரபாகு முருகனின் தூதனாகச் சென்று சூரனுக்கு அறிவுரை சொன்னான்; போரிலும் முன்னின்றான். இன்றும் முருகன் கோயில்களில் நவவீரர்களுக்கு இடம் உண்டு. இப்பாடல் சொல்லும் "கட்டழகர் நவவீரர்" இவர்களே.

The Nine Heroes Born from Anklet Gems

From the Kanda Puranam. The sparks from Shiva's third eye became six infants in the Saravana pool. When Parvati hurried to see them, the anklet on her foot shook and the nine precious gems in it scattered on the ground.

From each scattered gem a maiden appeared. By the Mother's grace, when those nine maidens stood before Shiva, nine heroes were born from them. The first was Veerabahu; the others were Veerakesari, Veeramahendran, Veeramahesan, Veerapurandaran, Veerarakkathan, Veeramarthandan, Veeranthakan and Veeradheeran. With them came hundreds of thousands of warriors.

These nine heroes became Murugan's brothers and the commanders of his army. In the war with Sooran, Veerabahu went as Murugan's messenger to counsel Sooran, and he led the fighting too. Murugan's temples still give the nine heroes a place. They are 'the handsome nine heroes' of this verse.
