Tamil tradition about the ThirumurugatruppadaiNakkeerar Rescued from the Cave
From the Tamil tradition about the Thirumurugatruppadai. One day Nakkeerar, a poet of the Madurai Sangam, sat by a pond near Thiruparankundram, performing worship to Shiva. A leaf fell so that half of it lay in the water and half on the bank. The half in the water turned into a fish and the half on land into a bird, and they began pulling against each other. Watching this wonder, Nakkeerar broke off his worship.
A demon named Karkimukhi, who waited to seize anyone who broke off their worship, caught Nakkeerar and shut him in a mountain cave. Nine hundred and ninety-nine people were already imprisoned there. The demon said that when it had a thousand, it would eat them all. The others wept and wailed.
Nakkeerar did not lose heart. He called on Murugan by singing the Thirumurugatruppadai, which begins 'Ulagam uvappa valaneerbu thiritharu', 'The sun that circles the world to its delight'. As the song ended, Murugan sent his vel. It split the mountain and destroyed the demon, and Nakkeerar and all thousand captives were set free. That is why people still believe that Murugan stands by those who recite the Thirumurugatruppadai with love.
