Explanation

To a person in poverty the thought naturally rises: 'I have nothing, others have, so why not take?' Need seems to justify the wrong. Ilam means lack, poverty. Valluvar says that those who have conquered the senses and have a faultless view will not covet others' property even in poverty. Pulam means the senses and also knowledge, and commentators take it as knowledge that has conquered the senses. Punmaiyil kaatchi is a clear vision without baseness.

How is this possible? Their needs are few and they find fulfilment in what they have. They do not regard 'not having' as a defect; for them desire is the defect. So others' wealth does not bewilder them, and even in poverty they stand with head held high. The habit of contentment in small means is their freedom.

Our tradition has many examples. Poets who lived in want did not abandon self-respect to seek others' wealth. Even today we see many who live honestly on small incomes. Lack must not make a man abandon dharma; it is only a chance to test his firmness. The verse also sets a limit on the excuse of necessity. Hunger explains many things, but Valluvar suggests that a trained mind can hold the line even where hunger is real, and that holding it is the surest dignity.

A story

Muchukunda's Refusal

This is the story of the emperor Muchukunda from the Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana. Muchukunda, son of Mandhata, was a heroic king of the Ikshvaku line. He helped the devas in their war with the asuras. For many years he fought and served as the commander of the gods. When Kartikeya was later appointed commander, the devas told Muchukunda, "You fought for us for many years. Your kingdom and kin have vanished with time. Ask for any boon."

Muchukunda, citing his bodily weariness, asked, "I need rest, a long sleep. Let whoever wakes me burn to ashes at once." The devas granted it, and he began sleeping in a mountain cave.

Ages passed. In the Dvapara age Krishna was pursued by a king named Kalayavana. Krishna tricked him into that cave and, throwing his own upper cloth over the sleeping Muchukunda, hid. Kalayavana took it to be Krishna and kicked it. Muchukunda woke, and by his glance Kalayavana burned to ashes.

Then Krishna showed Muchukunda his divine form. "What is your wish? Ask a boon," Krishna said. Muchukunda's heart melted at the sight of the Lord. "Lord, I lived deluded by kingship. Now I want no boon. Neither kingdom, wealth, children nor heaven. I want only refuge at your feet." Krishna blessed him and told him to perform tapas and win liberation.

He had not used the boons of the devas for himself, and when his kin and riches had vanished he desired nothing. Muchukunda, with the clarity of one who had conquered the senses, wished for nothing even in a state of 'having nothing'.

In a moment when I feel I have nothing, which desire must I keep in check?
