Explanation

In this verse Valluvar presents Thiru, the goddess of wealth, as a living, discerning deity. Lakshmi herself decides, by her own knowledge, to whom wealth should go. Seeing the worth of the wise who know the path of dharma and do not covet another's property, she comes seeking them. 'Thiran arindhu' means knowing their worth and capacity. 'Aangae' means 'right there', in their very homes.

The previous verse told the way to keep wealth from diminishing. This verse tells the way wealth arrives. It suggests that she withdraws from the one who runs after wealth, and that she reaches the worthy of her own accord. This is not superstition; it is a truth of experience. People trust the honest; trust enlarges trade and relationships; and that blossoms as wealth.

There is depth in the word 'arivudaiyaar' too. Those who know dharma are the wise. They are not merely those with book-learning but those who know what is fair, what is another's right, and who live by it. If one has such knowledge, non-coveting comes naturally.

Our tradition distinguishes the places where Lakshmi stays for a while from those where she dwells permanently. She is believed to stay firmly in a home of discipline, labour, purity and hospitality. This verse joins that belief to the path of dharma.

A story

King Janaka and Lakshmi

This is the story of King Janaka of Mithila told in the Mahabharata, the Bhagavata Purana and the Devi Bhagavata. Janaka ruled Mithila, the capital of Videha. We know him as Sita's father. Though a king, he had the unattached mind of a renunciant, and so was honoured as a 'Rajarishi,' a royal sage. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad records him taking part in the Upanishadic dialogues of sages like Yajnavalkya.

Under his rule the land of Mithila flourished. The fields yielded, trade grew, and brahmins and scholars thronged his court. He had no thought of seizing others' lands or wealth. He ruled justly what belonged to his own kingdom. He performed sacrifices and gave gifts. Though his palace was full of wealth, his mind was not bound by it.

A saying about Janaka in the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata is famous. Once, when word came that the city of Mithila was burning, he said, tradition tells, "Even if Mithila burns, nothing of mine is burning." The reason wealth abided with him was that he did not clutch at it.

When Shuka, the young sage, came to him, Janaka wished to test him. He kept him at the gate for days. Then he lodged him amid the luxury of the palace. At last he handed him a vessel filled to the brim with oil and asked him to walk around the city without spilling a drop. Though the city was full of dance, song and clamour, Shuka's mind did not wander and he returned without spilling a drop. Pleased, Janaka said, as the story goes, "You have known what was to be known."

Lakshmi stayed constantly with Janaka, who knew dharma and craved nothing. This royal sage is a fine example for the verse: Thiru seeks the wise who know dharma and do not covet.

To reflect on

When wealth is with me, do I hold it lightly rather than clutching it?
